Tweede roadtrip 2022 (slot)

4 december 2022 - Roermond, Nederland

Naar Neurenberg

To Neurenberg

Left without breakfast, which was served rather simply and unhealthily towards Nuremberg. Initially I wanted to go to Munich first, the problem was that Oktoberfest started there in 1 week, almost all hotel nights were fully booked, so the prices were also very high. Nuremberg was an attractive alternative because I love trains. Nuremberg housed a railway museum, one of the oldest in the world. Picked up my car in the parking garage, had to pay 24 € for 1 night of parking. Driving through the boulevards again for a long time before the freeway started. Drove past Linz, Wels and Passau towards Nuremberg. When I reached Bavaria I was able to enjoy an extensive Bavarian breakfast in a roadside restaurant.

When I arrived in Nuremberg I first wanted to go to the Altstadt to admire beautiful monuments. There was an antique market going on in the square. It was a pleasure to see everything. In the middle of the square there was a water fountain that looked like the Binnenhof in The Hague.

Got a stamp at the tourist information office. Around the square there were beautiful picturesque buildings to see. Was in the mood for a healthy lunch. Blonde waitress with braids dressed in drindl served bread with salad. Tasted perfect. Then I walked around before driving to the railway museum, about 10 km away.

The railway museum was housed in a stately building, you didn't see any old trains set up outside. I thought I had driven the wrong way despite the navigation screen indicating that I had reached the right place. Just rubbed my eyes and saw a small sign indicating that there was an entrance. Relieved, I parked my car a few blocks away. Once inside that building there was a souvenir shop and cash register. Then I really got into the museum section, there was a path marked from the very beginning.

The real showpiece was not the very first German steam locomotive Adler but the wagon of the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig, see photos above. You were short of your eyes and you drowned in the extreme luxury there. You followed the path to the outside, the rails stuck out of the building, just follow the track under other building through it. There were interesting trains set up there that had great significance at the Deutsche Reichsbahn and Bundesbahn. Like red locomotive Borsig that just reached 200 km, ICE high-speed train, and so on.

Back in the building I continued the route. Then I ended up at the Third Reich, where there were then insane trains designed for the Breitspurbahn with a track gauge of 3 meters. Fortunately, the plans had not even been carried out.

I went upstairs and ended up in the Cold War where Germany was divided. There were several models of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DDR) and Deutsche Bundesbahn (Federal Republic of Germany). In another room there was a huge model railway with more than 2 km of tracks. It was built by Fleischmann in the 60s and still works well.

Then I came to the station area where there were interesting old vending machines on display such as the stocking machine, the candy machine and personal scale.

Then I came back to the cash register. Almost missed the old mailbox. When you started posting the cards you got a nice date stamp delivered to your home.

Was curious at the souvenir shop and spotted the golden first locomotive Adler and wondered if it was made entirely of gold and reminded me of André van Duin who polished Golden Locomotive that he donated to the winning model railroaders in the Big Small Trains Competition. Hihi, I'm just trying to steal one. Fortunately, the price was very fair, that for € 15.

The visit there was quite impressive. Drove to a hotel near the suburb 10 km away. Had arranged the overnight stay online. Only the hotel was run unmanned with fully automatic reception. Got a code in advance where I had to enter, yes, I got a card with room number where I could open the door. The room was sober but modernly decorated. I wanted to go dinner and checked if there were any restaurants nearby, no, there was a café at the station. I walked over to it and saw that it was slightly dilapidated and I opened the door. Inside it was decorated with things that had to do with railways. Furthermore, there were old regulars cozy to skating, German card game.

The innkeeper was very friendly and welcoming. I asked if I could eat something. Kein Problem! he said. His wife made some sausages with mustard and potato salad. Accompanied with beer of course. Tasted very good. After dinner with the innkeeper we talked a lot about what had to do with the model trains. It got dark in the evening. Nearby was Rewe and bought some food for breakfast. Further on there was a liquor store and bought beer to drink one in the hotel. Because in the hotel there was only soft drinks and sweets in vending machines, so unhealthy. Drank beer, bah how bitter it was, turned out to be brewed in northern Germany. Went to bed early.

Next morning I went out very early to drive home, to of course be ahead of the traffic jams because of the many road works. The Autobahn to Frankfurt is being gently widened from 4 to 6 lanes. After Frankfurt, things went well. After 6 hours of driving I was back home at noon.
