Met de trein naar Monaco

To Monaco by train

Het was fijn slapen vannacht, alleen het ontbijtbuffet viel erg tegen, erg simpel. Ik ging boodschappen doen bij de supermarkt Bon Prix om de hoek, daar was veel gezonde keus die ook lekker smaakte. Ik at het op in de balkon genietend met warme stralen van de opgaande zon. De trein vertrok pas om half 10. Dus alle tijd dus. Ik stapte in de TER dubbeldeks stoptrein, helaas was die vrij kort en daarom erg druk. De reis duurde ruim 1 uur vanwege de vele stops. De uitzicht aan de landzijde viel erg tegen, overal bebouwing, terwijl aan de zeezijde prachtig was. Toen de trein door Nice passeerde was het overal echt een betonnen jungle met graffiti's, doordat er bovenop snelwegviaduct stond. Op een moment dook de trein de tunnel in, later ontvouwde zich een mooi showspel met vele spotlichten op de gewelfde plafond. Toen wist ik dat ik in Monaco aangekomen ben.

It was nice to sleep last night, only the breakfast buffet was very disappointing, very simple. I went shopping at the Supermarket Bon Prix around the corner, there was a lot of healthy choice that also tasted good. I ate it in the balcony enjoying warm rays of the rising sun. The train didn't leave until half past 10. So all the time. I got on the TER double-decker stop train, unfortunately it was quite short and therefore very busy. The journey took more than 1 hour because of the many stops. The view on the land side was very disappointing, buildings everywhere, while on the sea side was beautiful. When the train passed through Nice it was really a concrete jungle with graffiti everywhere, because there was a highway viaduct on top. At one point the train dived into the tunnel, later a beautiful show game unfolded with many spotlights on the vaulted ceiling. That's when I knew I had arrived in Monaco.

Het perron was erg lang in vergelijking met de korte TER dubbeldeks stoptrein. De reden hiervan is dat er verschillende uitgangen waren naar verschillende wijken. Ik nam de trappad naar beneden richting Monaco-Ville waar het prinselijk paleis stond. Eenmaal beneden moest ik weer klimmen naar Monaco-Ville op een slingerend trappad. Daar had je een uitzicht over de baai met haven en ik spotte dat er tribunes opgebouwd werden voor de F1 Grand Prix over een paar weken later. 

The platform was very long compared to the short TER double-decker stop train. The reason for this is that there were different exits to different neighborhoods. I took the stairway down towards Monaco-Ville where the princely palace stood. Once down I had to climb back to Monaco-Ville on a winding stair path. There you had a view over the bay with harbour and I spotted that grandstands were being built for the F1 Grand Prix in a few weeks later.

Hijgend boven aangekomen kwam ik op het plein voor het prinselijk paleis waar de wacht liep, flankerend met oude kanonnen aan elke kant. Om 12 uur was er een uitgebreide wisseling van de wacht wat veel toeristen aantrok. 

Panting at the top, I arrived at the square in front of the princely palace where the guard walked, flanking with old cannons on each side. At 12 o'clock there was an extensive changing of the guard which attracted many tourists.

Tegenover het paleis was er een officiële souvenirswinkel. Kochte een mooie glazende magneetplaat. 

Opposite the palace there was an official souvenir shop. Bought a beautiful shined magnetic plate.

De wijk rond het paleis is het oudste gedeelte van Monaco, het was waard om die te bezichtigen. Ik ging me ontspannen aan de terras en bestelde bier, alleen was het gewoon Amstel bier in plaats van roodkleurige Monaco bier die ik in Reims geproefd had. 

The district around the palace is the oldest part of Monaco, it was worth seeing. I went to relax on the terrace and ordered beer, only it was just Amstel beer instead of red-colored Monaco beer that I had tasted in Reims.

Na de terras liep ik iets licht naar beneden richting het Oceaangrafisch Instituut, vermaard om de aquarium en poolonderzoek door Albert I. De entree was indrukwekkend. Beneden was er verschillende grote en kleine aquariums waar er zelfs haaien en zeeschildpadden zwommen.

After the terrace I walked slightly down towards the Oceanographic Institute, renowned for the aquarium and polar research by Albert I. The entrance was impressive. Downstairs there were several large and small aquariums where there were even sharks and sea turtles swimming.

Nadat ik van de aquariums genoten had ging ik naar boven. Daar was er een grote collectie van de spullen voor de poolexpedities die door Albert I ondernam. Liep door het schip en plotseling schrok ik alsof ik een geest zag. Prins Albert I verscheen voor me en vertelde me in het Frans hoe hij het initatief nam om expedities te ondernemen. Hij was erg geinteresseerd in zeedieren. Tot slot zei hij dat ik gerust van zijn collectie mag genieten. Toen bleek het een holografische projectie. Wat een knap staaltje techniek!

After enjoying the aquariums I went upstairs. There was a large collection of the items for the polar expeditions undertaken by Albert I. Walked through the ship and suddenly I was startled as if I saw a ghost. Prince Albert I appeared before me and told me in French how he took the initiative to undertake expeditions. He was very interested in marine animals. Finally, he said that I can enjoy his collection. Then it turned out to be a holographic projection. What a fine piece of technology!

Indruk van die "geestverschijning" verliet ik het Oceaangrafisch Instituut richting Fontvieille. Fontvieille is een nieuwe wijk die uit de zee gewonnen werd zodat het landoppervlakte van Monaco iets groter werd zo'n 2 vierkante km in totaal. Toen moest ik via de liften en tunnels gaan. Sommige tunnels waren prachtig verlicht, deze keer met de kleuren van Oekraïne.

Impressed of that "ghost apparition" I left the Oceanographic Institute towards Fontvieille. Fontvieille is a new district that was extracted from the sea so that the land area of Monaco became slightly larger about 2 square km in total. Then I had to go through the elevators and tunnels. Some of the tunnels were beautifully lit, this time with the colors of Ukraine.

Aangekomen in het commericiële hart van Fontvieille met vele winkels onder 1 dak waren er verschillende musea gevestigd, waar eentje waar ik heel lang erover gedroomd had, de postzegel- en muntmuseum van Monaco. Het museum leek wel op een miniversie van het geldpakhuis van Dagobert Duck. Jammer genoeg was het verboden om binnen foto's te maken, maar de collectie was erg indrukwekkend van het allereerste begin en er waren ook diverse drukproeven. 

Arriving in the commercial heart of Fontvieille with many shops under 1 roof, there were several museums, including one that I had dreamed about for a long time, the stamp and coin museum of Monaco. The museum looked like a mini version of Dagobert Duck's money warehouse. Unfortunately, it was forbidden to take photos inside, but the collection was very impressive from the very beginning and there were also several proofs.

Je mocht je post bij de receptie af te geven, een sympathieke dame zorgt er voor dat ze door de filatleische dienst van Monaco mooi afgestempeld worden. Had honger gekregen en wilde gaan lunchen op de terras en bestelde een pasta gerecht want er zijn veel Italiaanse invloed op de Monegaskische keuken. Smaakte heerlijk. Niet ver van het postzegel- en muntmuseum was er een oldtimer museum. Niet alles was oldtimer maar ook nieuw van de beroemde Monte Carlo rally en Formule 1. Hoopte de race-auto van Max Verstappen te zien. Ja, mijn geduld werd beloond.

You were allowed to drop off your mail at the reception, a sympathetic lady ensures that they are nicely stamped by the philatelic service of Monaco. Had gotten hungry and wanted to have lunch on the terrace and ordered a pasta dish because there are a lot of Italian influence on Monegasque cuisine. Tasted delicious. Not far from the stamp and coin museum there was an oldtimer museum. Not everything was oldtimer but also new from the famous Monte Carlo rally and Formula 1. Hoped to see Max Verstappen's race car. Yes, my patience was rewarded.

Later in de middag begon het hevig te regenen, en het was ook tijd om terug naar Cannes te gaan. Dat was balen en ik had graag de Casino willen zien. Vanuit Fontvieille liep er een tunnel van ruim 1 kilometer met snelle beweegbare pad richting het station. Weer die verdomde langzame stoptrein terug naar Cannes. Helaas stopt de TGV niet in Monaco of in Cannes. Eenmaal in de trein kwam de conducteur langs om de kaartjes te controleren. Ik had onlinekaartje in mijn mobiel. Maar als de trein door de tunnel passeert viel de verbinding ineens weg tot de frustratie van de conducteur. Na een paar tunnels verder werkte de verbinding weer perfect, zodat hij de QR-code kon scannen. 

Later in the afternoon it started to rain heavily, and it was also time to go back to Cannes. That was baling and I would have liked to see the Casino. From Fontvieille there was a tunnel of more than 1 kilometer with a fast movable path towards the station. Again that damn slow stop train back to Cannes. Unfortunately, the TGV does not stop in Monaco or Cannes. Once on the train, the conductor came by to check the tickets. I had an online ticket in my mobile. But as the train passes through the tunnel, the connection suddenly dropped to the frustration of the conductor. After a few tunnels further, the connection worked perfectly again, so he could scan the QR code.

Terug in het hotel moest ik de overnachting voor de terugreis regelen, de avond was jong en wilde het oude gedeelte van Cannes verkennen en gezellige restaurant op te zoeken. Het was best lang lopen naarmate het ouder werd op de heuvel. Het was echt prachtig om te zien. Ik dineerde op zijn Frans met uiensoep als begin, daarna friet met tartaar en salade. Voldaan liep ik de heuvel op de zijstraatjes verkennend, leek wel op Montematre in Parijs.

Back at the hotel I had to arrange the overnight stay for the return trip, the evening was young and wanted to explore the old part of Cannes and look for a cozy restaurant. It was quite a long walk as it got older on the hill. It was really beautiful to see. I dined on his French with onion soup as a start, then fries with tartare and salad. Satisfied I walked the hill on the side streets exploring, looked like Montematre in Paris.

Liep naar beneden richting de promenade aan de strand terug naar het hotel. Wat een mooie afsluiting van mijn roadtrip. Dronk mijn laatste bier in de balkon voordat ik ging slapen.

Walked down towards the beach promenade back to the hotel. What a nice end to my road trip. Drank my last beer in the balcony before going to sleep.
