Naar Bosnië en Herzegovina

To Bosnia and Herzegovina

Was vroeg opgestaan en wilde vroeg vertrekken want ik vreesde voor de slechte wegen en lastige douane in Bosnië. Voordat ik weg ging overhandigde ik de huiseigenaar zelfgemaakte kaaspakket die ik gisteren gekocht had als dank voor zijn gastvrijheid. Toen ik daarna weg wou rijden kwam zijn oudere broer die eigenaar is van zijn restaurant die ik regelmatig bezocht had aanlopen. Tot mijn verrassing overhandigde hij zijn zelfgestookte likeur met heerlijke geur.

Got up early and wanted to leave early because I feared for the bad roads and difficult customs in Bosnia. Before I left, I handed the homeowner homemade cheese package that I bought yesterday as a thank you for his hospitality. When I wanted to drive away afterwards, his older brother who owns his restaurant that I had visited regularly came running up. To my surprise, he handed over his home-made liqueur with delicious scent.

Heel dankbaar ging ik de hoofdweg op richting Bihác. De rit tot de grens duurde bijna 1 uur. Aangekomen bij de douane viel het mee, al niet te veel oponthoud, wel een stempel op mijn paspoort gekregen omdat Bosnië en Herzegovina niet tot de EU of Schengen hoort. De weg richting Bihác is ook verrassend goed. Ik wou al eens naar Bosnië en Herzegovina gaan maar het ging niet door vanwege de covid-19 beperkingen. Mijn Poolse collega's waren daarna geweest en ze waren vol lof over dit land, maar er zijn zaken waar je moet uitkijken. Niet afdwalen want er zijn nog mijnen die niet allemaal opgeruimd zijn en vermijd de Servische gebieden tenzij als je op doorreis bent.

Very gratefully I went up the main road towards Bihác. The drive to the border took almost 1 hour. Arriving at customs it was not too bad, not too much delay, but I got a stamp on my passport because Bosnia and Herzegovina does not belong to the EU or Schengen. The road towards Bihác is also surprisingly good. I already wanted to go to Bosnia and Herzegovina but it did not take place because of the covid-19 restrictions. My Polish colleagues had been there after that and they were full of praise for this country, but there are things you have to watch out for. Do not stray because there are still mines that have not all been cleared and avoid the Serbian areas unless you are in transit.

Aangekomen in Bihác parkeerde ik bij het historisch stadscentrum. Eerst wilde ik euro's wisselen voor Bosnische Konvertibele Marken. Die Marken zijn precies evenveel waard als oude Duitse Marken of halve euro's. Hoewel euro's daar geaccepteerd worden bij de toeritische hotspots leek me het verstandigst om gewoon KM te betalen. Als ik de bankbiljetten goed bekeek viel me een ding op dat er bij hetzelfde waarde van bv. 10 KM twee verschillende bankbiljetten zijn, 1 voor Servisch gebied en 1 voor Bosnisch en Kroatisch gebied. Zoek maar de verschillen op de foto's hieronder.

Arriving in Bihác I parked at the historic city center. First I wanted to exchange euros for Bosnian Konvertibele Marken. Those Marks are worth exactly as much as old German Marks or half euros. Although euros are accepted there at the tourist hotspots, I thought it wisest to just pay KM. If I looked closely at the banknotes, one thing struck me was that at the same value of e.g. 10 KM there are two different banknotes, 1 for Serbian territory and 1 for Bosnian and Croatian territory. Just look for the differences in the pictures below.

In praktijk worden ze gewoon door elkaar gebruikt. Het herinneerde mij toen ik in Noord-Ierland was dat mij werd verteld dat het helemaal niets uitmaakt zolang het maar geld is. De hoogste waarde is 200 KM maar er is maar 1 bankbiljet voor hele land in praktijk worden die zelden gebruikt. Na het wisselen ging ik naar het postkantoor om mooie stempel te scoren want er zou een filatelisch loket aanwezig zijn. Toen ik binnenkwam waren er lange rijen ouderen en gehandicapten voor de twee loketten van de tien loketten. Die twee loketten waren open en de rest was dicht. Die mensen vertelden me in gebaren dat ze voor de uitkering kwamen die in dikke stapel contant uitbetaald werd. Oké, laat het maar zitten, duurt veel te lang. Wist je dat Bosnië en Herzegovina drie postwezen heeft? Hieronder Bosnisch (moslimgebied);

In practice, they are simply used interchangeably. It reminded me when I was in Northern Ireland that I was told that it doesn't matter at all as long as it's money. The highest value is 200 KM but there is only 1 banknote for whole country in practice which are rarely used. After the change I went to the post office to score a nice stamp because there would be a philatelic counter. When I entered, there were long lines of elderly and disabled people in front of the two counters of the ten counters. Those two counters were open and the rest were closed. Those people told me in gestures that they came for the benefit that was paid in cash in a thick pile. Okay, never mind, takes way too long. Did you know that Bosnia and Herzegovina has three postal services? Below Bosnian (Muslim area);

Ik had zin in koffie en bestelde bij de terras. Tot mijn verbazing was de koffie erg sterk. Gelukkig was er glas water erbij zodat ik de smaak van die koffie weg kon drinken. De Bosnische keuken heeft veel Ottomaanse invloeden, dat proef je echt. Na de koffie ging ik naar het toeritisch informatiebureau. Daar kreeg ik stempel en kaart van Bihác. Zo kon ik een stadswandeling maken. Het eerste interessant gebouw heet Kaptenanovo Kula (kapitein Toren). De legende vertelt dat de koning Bela IV zich verstopte om voor te komen dat hij gekidnapt werd door de vijand.

I felt like coffee and ordered from the terrace. To my surprise, the coffee was very strong. Fortunately, there was a glass of water so that I could drink away the taste of that coffee. Bosnian cuisine has a lot of Ottoman influences, you can really taste that. After coffee I went to the tourist information office. There I got stamp and card from Bihác. That way I could take a city walk. The first interesting building is called Kaptenanovo Kula (Captain Tower). Legend has it that king Bela IV hid to avoid being kidnapped by the enemy.

Vlakbij de toren ligt de mausoleum waar de ottomaanse leiders begraven werden, te herkennen aan groen geverfde graven.

Near the tower is the mausoleum where the Ottoman leaders were buried, recognizable by green painted graves.

Ander interessant gebouw is de Fethija moskee. Heel ongebruikelijke vorm van de moskee. Gotische elementen verraadden dat het vroeger een christelijke kerk was geweest, die na de verovering door de ottomanen tot een moskee omgebouwd werd.

Another interesting building is the Fethija mosque. Very unusual shape of the mosque. Gothic elements betrayed that it had formerly been a Christian church, which was converted into a mosque after the conquest by the Ottomans.

Verder waren er niet zo veel interessante dingen te zien maar in de omgeving van Bihác is er veel natuurschoon met watervallen en meren. Verder zijn er historische plaatsen in de buurt zoals Ostrozac kasteel. Helaas heb ik niet zo veel tijd voor. Terug in het centrum zag ik veel slapende honden op straat. Er lopen wat honden los, ik zou die maar met rust laten vanwege het gevaar voor hondsdolheid.

Furthermore, there were not so many interesting things to see but in the area of Bihác there is a lot of natural beauty with waterfalls and lakes. Furthermore, there are historical places nearby such as Ostrozac castle. Unfortunately, I don't have much time for it. Back in the center I saw many sleeping dogs on the street. There are some dogs running loose, I would leave them alone because of the danger of rabies.

Ik had er zin in een lunch. Ging naar een pizzatent en bestelde stuk pizza en zag dat er een soort prikvrij frisdrank geserveerd werd. Die wordt Boza genoemd naar een oud Ottomaans recept, heel lekker maar niet te zoet. Dronk het glas heel snel leeg, zó lekker was dat. Ik zou het van harte aanbevelen ipv. cola.

I was looking forward to lunch. Went to a pizza place and ordered a piece of pizza and saw that a kind of prick-free soda was served. It is called Boza after an old Ottoman recipe, very tasty but not too sweet. Drank the glass very quickly, that was so delicious. I would wholeheartedly recommend it instead of. cola.

Na de lunch ging ik wat inkopen doen en zag toevallig DM winkel van de Duitse drogisterijketen. Erg herkenbaar als thuis en kon ik makkelijk spullen vinden en kopen zonder in het Bosnisch te moeten vragen. Het werd tijd om verder te gaan, ditmaal naar het noorden. Weer terug naar Kroatië. Er ontstond een kleine file voor de douane. Daarna was het soepel doorrijden op de hoofdweg tot de snelweg in Karlovac. Zo kwam ik weer in Slovenië terecht. Via de kleine weggetjes door mooi berglandschap kwam ik na een paar uur bij de boerderij in Rakitna die tot een pensioen verbouwd is, terecht die Tourist Farm Strle heet.

After lunch I went to do some shopping and happened to see DM store of the German drugstore chain. Very recognizable as home and I could easily find and buy things without having to ask in Bosnian. It was time to move on, this time to the north. Back to Croatia. There was a small traffic jam for customs. After that it was smooth driving on the main road to the turnpike in Karlovac. That's how I ended up in Slovenia again. Via the small roads through beautiful mountain scenery I arrived after a few hours at the farm in Rakitna that has been converted into a pension, which is called Tourist Farm Strle.

De omgeving is heel mooi, omgeven door de natuur en ik werd erg gastvrij ontvangen door de jonge boer die met zijn ouders in het pensioen woont. Alles wordt er biologisch verbouwd. Een stal werd omgebouwd tot feestzaal/restaurant. Ging een paar uurtjes slapen tot het tijd werd voor het diner. Het was nog mooi weer 's-avonds en ging aan de terras zitten. Naast me zaten er twee leuke dames en zag dat zij uit België kwamen, was te herkennen aan de kentekenplaat van hun auto. Ze zeiden dat zij uit Antwerpen kwam. De moeder van die jonge boer maakte fantasisch biologisch slovenisch driegangen diner. Het was echt een genoegen.

The surroundings are very beautiful, surrounded by nature and I was received very hospitably by the young farmer who lives with his parents in retirement. Everything is grown organically. A stable was converted into a party room/restaurant. Went to sleep for a few hours until it was time for dinner. The weather was still nice in the evening and we sat down on the terrace. Next to me there were two nice ladies and saw that they came from Belgium, could be recognized by the license plate of their car. They said she was from Antwerp. The mother of that young farmer made fantastic organic Slovenic three-course dinner. It was a real pleasure.

Na het diner dronk ik wat bier en kletste ik met die jonge boer. Hij bleek dat hij interessante euromunten verzamelde. Vooral bijzondere twee euromunten met afwijkende beeltenis. Ik had er heel wat in mijn portemonnee zitten en toonde hem verschillende munten en als hij de ene munt interessant vond mocht hij het houden in vorm van een fooi. Na een leuk gesprek ging ik onder de wol. Er wacht me een spannend avontuur morgen.

After dinner I drank some beer and chatted with that young farmer. He turned out to be collecting interesting euro coins. Especially special two euro coins with different effigy. I had a lot of them in my wallet and showed him different coins and if he found the one coin interesting he could keep it in the form of a tip. After a nice conversation I went under the wool. An exciting adventure awaits me tomorrow.
