To Polen and back to home

Stond heel vroeg op en had mijn koffer ingepakt. Ik had geen zin in om uit te slapen door die slapie, daarom wilde ik me snel uitschrijven en vertrekken. Omdat het nog buiten donker was had ik geen ontbijt genuttigd, ik wilde het doen als ik in Polen ben. Uitrijden vanaf het midden van Berlijn blijkt het nog lastiger. Niet vanwege het verkeer maar vanwege de vele omleidingen. Moest regelmatig mijn smartphone raadplegen waar ik me bevond. Na wat moeite kon ik de Berlijnse buitenring A10 vinden. Kon eindelijk opschieten totdat ik de afslag vond, de Bundesstrasse 1 richting Kostrzyn nad Odra. Oorspronkelijk liep de Bundesstrasse (vroeger Reichstrasse, bij de DDR-tijd Fernstrasse) vanaf de grens bij Vaals tot Köningsberg, Oost-Pruisen, tegenwoordig Kaliningrad in Rusland. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog was het afgekort tot de Poolse grens. 

I got up very early and packed my suitcase. I didn't want to sleep in because of that slapy, so I wanted to unsubscribe and leave quickly. Because it was still dark outside I had not eaten breakfast, I wanted to do it when I am in Poland. Driving from the center of Berlin appears to be even more difficult. Not because of the traffic but because of the many diversions. Had to regularly consult my smartphone where I was. After some effort I was able to find the Berlin outer ring A10. Could finally hurry up until I found the exit, the Bundesstrasse 1 towards Kostrzyn nad Odra. Originally the Bundesstrasse (formerly Reichstrasse, at the GDR time Fernstrasse) ran from the border at Vaals to Köningsberg, East Prussia, now Kaliningrad in Russia. After the Second World War it was abbreviated to the Polish border.

Naar Kostrzyn nad Odra

De weg naar Kostrzyn nad Odra (Kürstin am Oder) was erg afwisselend totdat ik de Poolse grens kwam. Het werd gescheiden door de rivier de Oder. Je moest de noodbrug oprijden want de oorspronkelijke brug was opgeblazen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Na de val van de Muur werd de noodbrug aangelegd. Eindelijk was ik voor het eerst in Polen. Mijn Poolse collega's en vrienden zeiden vaak tegen me dat ik beslist Polen moet bezoeken. Allereerst zocht ik eettentje waar ik kon ontbijten. Ik hoefde niet zo ver te zoeken want de tankstations waren bij de vleet vanwege de goedkopere benzine (op dat moment Euro 95 voor 1,15 euro per liter). Bestelde halve baquette met soort warm gehakt met gesmolten kaas en grote kop Latte voor 3,40 euro. Puh, lekker goedkoop, maar wel lekker van smaak.

The road to Kostrzyn nad Odra (Kürstin am Oder) was very varied until I reached the Polish border. It was separated by the river Oder. You had to drive onto the emergency bridge because the original bridge was blown up during the Second World War. The emergency bridge was constructed after the fall of the Wall. Finally I was in Poland for the first time. My Polish colleagues and friends often told me that I should definitely visit Poland. First of all I was looking for a place where I could have breakfast. I didn't have to look that far because the gas stations were in high demand because of the cheaper gasoline (at that time Euro 95 for 1.15 euros per liter). Ordered half baquette with kind of hot minced meat with melted cheese and large cup of Latte for 3.40 euros. Puh, nice and cheap, but yummy.

Naar het openlucht museum

Voordat ik naar het museum ging, liep ik in de wisselkantoor binnen. Vroeg aan de bankmedewerker in het Pools via mijn smartphone welke Poolse bankbiljet hij het mooiste vond. Wilde hem gebruiken als aandenken. Hij zei het maakt hem niks uit, hij vond ze allemaal mooi, wat een echte patriot. Nou, ik dacht aan de paarse bankbiljet van 20 Zloty, ongeveer 5 euro. In hele Poolse reeks vanaf 10 tot 500 Zloty waren er vroegere Poolse koningen afgebeeld in een conservatieve ontwerp. Hoe hoger de waarde des te meer veiligheidskenmerken. Toen ik de het museum bereikte was het museum zelf gesloten tot april, maar het openluchtgedeelte was vrij toegankelijk. Verder was de museumshop wel open, daar lag grote stempel klaar als souvenir om zelf op de kaarten te stempelen.

Before I went to the museum, I entered the exchange office. Asked the bank employee in Polish via my smartphone which Polish banknote he liked best. Wanted to use it as a memento. He said he doesn't care, he thought they were all beautiful, what a true patriot. Well, I thought of the purple 20 zloty banknote, about 5 euros. In entire Polish series from 10 to 500 Zloty, former Polish kings were depicted in a conservative design. The higher the value, the more safety features. When I reached the museum, the museum itself was closed until April, but the outdoor area was freely accessible. Furthermore, the museum shop was open, there was a large stamp ready as a souvenir to stamp on the cards.

Buiten in het openlucht gedeelte van het museum waren de restanten van het Pruissische vesting te zien. Binnen dat vesting was er vroeger stad Kürstin gebouwd. Helaas was er weinig meer van over gebleven ten gevolge van de Russische bombardement in de laatste fase van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij de slag om Berlijn. Je kon de stilhouetten zien van de vroegere straten, rüines, etc. overwoekerd door gras, boompjes en planten. Deze straten hadden merkwaardige stratennamen zoals spijkersmidstraat en schoorsteenvegersstraat. 

The remains of the Prussian fortress could be seen outside in the open-air part of the museum. The city of Kürstin was once built within that fortress. Unfortunately, little had remained as a result of the Russian bombing in the final phase of the Second World War at the Battle of Berlin. You could see the still silhouettes of the former streets, ruins, etc. overgrown by grass, trees and plants. These streets had strange street names such as nail smith street and chimney sweep street.

Even naar het centrum van Kostrzyn nad Odra

Heel mooi om te zien, om de reden dat het somberachtig uitzag geholpen door het slecht weer. Alsof het er alles op zwartwit foto's stond. Ik ging naar het postkantoor in het centrum. Die was gevestigd naast het oud klein gerestaueerd treinstation. Het interessante van dat station dat de perrons elkaar kruisden, het bovenste perron treinen kwamen vanuit het noorden of het zuiden. Het onderste perron, de treinen uit Duitsland en Oost-Polen. In het postkantoor kocht ik wat postzegels en plakte ik ze op mijn kaarten en deed die kaarten in de postbus. Het gekke daarvan dat ik mijn kaarten pas over 10 dagen in mijn brievenbus terug zag, wat een trage Poolse posterijen. Terwijl sommige kaarten uit Berlijn pas over 2 dagen bij mij thuis aankwamen.

Very nice to see, for the reason that it looked gloomy helped by the bad weather. As if it was all there on black and white photos. I went to the post office in the center. It was located next to the old small restored train station. The interesting thing about that station that the platforms crossed each other, the upper platform trains came from the north or the south. The lower platform, the trains from Germany and Eastern Poland. In the post office I bought some stamps and put them on my cards and put them in the mailbox. The strange thing is that I only saw my cards in my mailbox in 10 days, what a slow Polish post. While some cards from Berlin only arrived in my home in 2 days.

Naar het nationaal natuurpark "Ujście Warty" 

Het infocenter met observatie toren bevond zich ca. 10 km van Kostrzyn nad Odra in een mooie landschap, gevormd door de splitsing van de rivieren Warta en Oder. Daar waren er wetlands en moerassen te zien waar men bijna 270 soorten vogels kon spotten wanneer zij overwinterden. In het infocenter kon ik mijn kaarten laten stempelen. Daarna beklom ik de toren die 20 meter hoog was op de trappen naar boven. Wat was het uitzicht mooi te zien. Niks anders dan wetlands en moerassen waar sommige iepen boven het water uitstaken. Er zijn wandelspaden aangelegd maar ik had er helaas geen tijd voor omdat ik op tijd naar huis moest, in verband met de vroege dienst volgende morgen.

The information center with observation tower was located about 10 km from Kostrzyn nad Odra in a beautiful landscape formed by the division of the Warta and Oder rivers. There were wetlands and swamps where almost 270 species of birds could be spotted when they spent the winter. In the info center I could have my cards stamped. Then I climbed the tower that was 20 meters high on the stairs to the top. The view was beautiful. Nothing but wetlands and swamps where some elms were above the water. Hiking trails have been laid but unfortunately I didn't have the time because I had to go home on time because of the early service next morning.

Naar huis

Nadat ik een tijdje van het uitzicht genoten te hebben ging ik weer terug naar het tankstation om snel met goedkope benzine vol te gooien. Ik reed in een mooie landschap bij de Seelower Höhen richting de Autobahn A12 die naar Berliner Ring A10 leidt. Toen ik op de Autobahn was er bijna aangesloten rij trucks aan de rechterkant afkomstig uit Polen wat het tot files leidde in de Berliner Ring. Ik besloot uit te wijken richting Halle ipv. Hannover. De afstandsverschil is maar klein, maar je kon wel flink er mee opschieten. Om richting Kassel te gaan moest je langs Halle heen door de gewone 4-baansweg met stoplichten, wat het even niet opschoot. Eindelijk bereikte ik de gloednieuwe Autobahn A38 door de Harz tot Kassel. Het was nauwelijks druk daar. 

After enjoying the view for a while I went back to the gas station to quickly fill up with cheap fuel. I drove in a beautiful landscape at the Seelower Höhen towards the Autobahn A12 that leads to Berliner Ring A10. When I was on the Autobahn there was almost a row of connected trucks on the right coming from Poland, which led to traffic jams in the Berliner Ring. I decided to move in the direction of Halle instead of. Hanover. The distance difference is only small, but you could really get along with it. To go in the direction of Kassel you had to go past Halle through the normal 4-lane road with traffic lights, which did not work for a while. Finally I reached the brand new Autobahn A38 through the Harz to Kassel. It was hardly busy there.

Afslag richting Dormund bij Kassel was helaas afgesloten, dus ik had het pech dat ik weer in de file terecht kwam. De omleiding was binnendoor in Kassel op een smalle Autobahn. Ik verveelde me af en maakte foto's uit verveling van de auto's met opvallende kentekens zoals LU L, je raadt het al wat het in het Nederlands betekent, haha. Na een half uur was ik weer in de juiste Autobahn richting Dortmund. Weer hard scheuren totdat ik Dortmund bereikte, want de Autobahn hield even op met paar stoplichten voordat je naar Essen kon. 

The exit towards Dormund near Kassel was unfortunately closed, so I was unlucky that I ended up in a traffic jam again. The detour was in Kassel on a narrow Autobahn. I was bored and took pictures of boredom of the cars with striking license plates such as LU L (English for cock or dick), you guessed what it means in Dutch, haha. After half an hour I was in the right Autobahn in the direction of Dortmund. Tearing hard again until I reached Dortmund, because the Autobahn stopped with a few traffic lights before you could go to Essen.

In Bochum was er weer file ten gevolge van een ongeluk, maar het was gelukkig van korte duur. Tussen Essen-Kray en Essen-Frillendorf was het weer raak. De file loste zich weer op toen ik de splitsing richting Düsseldorf bereikte. Eindelijk weer scheuren todat ik weer door de enkele stoplichten in Düsseldorf moest rijden om de Autobahn A52 richting Roermond te bereiken. Pas om half 10 's-avonds was ik weer thuis. Aangezien ik volgende morgen vroege dienst had, kon ik even niet nagenieten. Dus rap onder de dekens zonder mijn koffer uit te pakken.

In Bochum there was another traffic jam due to an accident, but luckily it was short-lived. Between Essen-Kray and Essen-Frillendorf it was hit again. The traffic jam resolved when I reached the Autobahn A52 towards Roermond. I wasn't home until half past 10 in the evening. Since I had early service the next morning, I couldn't enjoy it for a while. So rap under the covers without unpacking my suitcase.

Berlijn was echt cool. Ik zou iedereen willen aanraden om eens er heen te gaan. Er zijn zoveel mogelijkheden voor elk wat wils. Ook zijn er alternatieven genoeg voor als men de massatoerisme wil ontwijken. Voor zo'n trip moet je zeker minimaal 2 dagen ervoor uit trekken. Kijk eerst van tevoren naar de tips van andere reisbloggers van mijn vorige blog. Mis Polen ook niet want die is maar 80 km van Berlijn verwijderd. Ik raad het vanaf de lente aan. Dan is de openluchtmuseum van Kostrzyn nad Odra helemaal open. Wanneer het weer mooi is ook wandelen in het Nationaal Natuurpark "Ujście Warty". Voor de popmuziek liefhebbers wordt er in Kostrzyn nad Odra zomers een openlucht concert georganiseerd die "Woodstock" heet, heel toepasselijk.

Berlin was really cool. I would recommend everyone to go there sometime. There are so many options for everyone. There are also plenty of alternatives if you want to avoid mass tourism. For such a trip you should certainly take at least 2 days before. First look in advance at the tips of other travel bloggers from my previous blog. Don't miss Poland either, as it is only 80 km away from Berlin. I recommend it from spring. Then the open air museum of Kostrzyn nad Odra is completely open. When the weather is nice also walk in the National Nature Park "Ujście Warty". For pop music lovers an open-air concert called "Woodstock" is organized in Kostrzyn nad Odra in the summer, very appropriate.
