Day out in Andorra

Na een goede nachtrust ging ik ontbijten in de restaurant van de hotel. Het ontbijtbuffet was eenvoudig. Om extra pit te geven had ik lekkere Franse Dijon-mosterd met kerrie meegenomen wat ik onderweg gekocht had. Smaakte perfect bij de flauwe boterhamvlees. Na het ontbijt wilde ik naar het centrum van Encamp gaan wandelen. Gisteravond was het te donker dus ik wilde het historisch kern graag met mijn eigen ogen zien hoe Andorra er vroeger uitzag. Het was geconcentreerd rond de piepklein oud kerkje Mosquera. Daarin bevond zich een schilderij over de onthoofding van Johannes de Doper. Het leek wel alsof de gasten trek hadden in zo'n "hoofdgerecht". Helaas was de kerkje niet te bezichtigen.

After a good night's sleep, I went to have breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The breakfast buffet was simple. To give extra spice I had brought tasty French Dijon mustard with curry that I had bought along the way. Tasted perfect with the bland sandwich meat. After breakfast I wanted to go for a walk to the center of Encamp. Last night it was too dark so I wanted to see the historical core with my own eyes what Andorra used to look like. It was concentrated around the tiny old church Mosquera. In it was a painting about the beheading of John the Baptist. It seemed as if the guests were hungry for such a "main course". Unfortunately, the church could not be visited.

 

Ik liep acherlangs om en ontdekte prachtige historische buurt met steile en smalle steegjes en het verbaasde me hoe de auto's zich door die stegen wurmden. Verderop werden de stegen steeds smaller en hoger waar de mens alleen konden passeren. Het gaf me een indruk hoe de straatarme Andorranen leefden voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Langs de hoofdstraat stonden er borden met oude foto's van toen opgesteld. Er wordt jaarlijks een festival georganiseerd met authenieke klederdrachten en volksdansen.

I walked around and discovered beautiful historic neighborhood with steep and narrow alleys and it amazed me how the cars squeezed through those alleys. Further on, the alleys became narrower and higher where humans could pass alone. It gave me an impression of how the poverty-stricken Andorrans lived before the Second World War. Along the main street there were signs with old photos of that time. Every year a festival is organized with authentic costumes and folk dances.

 

Het was echt prachtig om te zien en liep terug naar het hoofdstraat. Terug naar het hotel ontdekte ik een oldtimer automuseum. Helaas was die dicht op de feestdag die vandaag viel, de Dag van de Arbeid. Ik wilde die wel op de daarop volgende dag wel bezoeken maar die was ook dicht. Wat een teleurstelling!

It was really beautiful to see and walked back to the main street. Back to the hotel I discovered an oldtimer car museum. Unfortunately, it was close on the holiday that fell today, Labor Day. I wanted to visit it on the next day but it was also closed. What a disappointment!

Ik wilde Andorra La Vella bezoeken, met de auto erheen gaan leek me niet zo handig vanwege de drukte dus ik besloot om de bus te nemen. Er rijden frequent bussen richting het hoofdstad, het was ook goedkoop. Alleen was het erg druk in de bus. Ik stapte uit precies in het midden van de stad aan de rivier. Ik liep richting het zuiden richting het oud stadscentrum. En spotte twee soorten postbussen, een van de Franse posterij en een van de Spaanse posterij. Andorra heeft geen eigen posterij maar wordt bediend door Franse en Spaanse posterijen met aparte postzegels die alleen in Andorra gebruikt mogen worden, dus geen gewone Franse of Spaanse postzegels. Interessant detail: oud Frans-Andorraanse postzegels met Franc waardeduiding zijn nog steeds geldig.

I wanted to visit Andorra La Vella, going there by car didn't seem so convenient to me because of the crowds so I decided to take the bus. There are frequent buses to the capital, it was also cheap. Only it was very busy in the bus. I got out right in the middle of the city by the river. I walked south towards the old city center. And spotted two types of mailboxes, one from the French post office and one from the Spanish post office. Andorra does not have its own postal service but is served by French and Spanish postal services with separate stamps that can only be used in Andorra, so no ordinary French or Spanish stamps. Interesting detail: old French-Andorran stamps with Franc value indication are still valid.

Aangelopen in het oud stadscentrum zag het vrij toeritisch uit, er waren flinke hoogteverschillen tussen de gebouwen waar men de trappen moet oplopen. Een koerier met brommer was zó onhandig de trap op te rijden. Tja, ik zei tegen hem waarom niet effe lopen met pakket? Hij kon maar lachen, dus hij liet zijn brommer maar achter. Boven bevond zich de kleine regeringszetel met het klein parlementje. Andorra wordt heel lang bestuurd door twee co-prinsen, eentje Macron, de huidige Franse president en eentje de Spaanse bisschop uit de nabij gelegen Spaanse plaats Seu d'Urgel. 

When you walked into the old city center it looked quite touristy, there were considerable height differences between the buildings where one has to climb the stairs. A courier with a moped was so inconvenient to drive up the stairs. Well, I said to him why not walk  with package? He could only laugh, so he left his moped behind. Upstairs was the small seat of government with the small parliament. Andorra has long been ruled by two co-princes, one Macron, the current French president and one the Spanish bishop from the nearby Spanish town of Seu d'Urgel.

Liep terug langs de lange winkelstraat die liefst 2 km lang is langs de smalle stad van 25.000 inwoners. Ik keek met mijn ogen uit, het leek wel een wereldstad met hoge winkelgebouwen. Er werd veel van alles te koop aangeboden, van zeer luxe tot goedkope tabaks- en drankwinkels. Alles kan men belastingvrij winkelen. Precies in het midden op de brug was er een imposant kunstwerk van Salvador Dali te zien. Mijn oog viel op de grote modeltrein speciaalzaak. Er werden veel messingen modeltreinen geimporteerd . De prijzijn zagen er echt onbetaalbaar uit. 

Walked back along the long shopping street that is no less than 2 km long along the narrow city of 25,000 inhabitants. I looked out with my eyes, it looked like a metropolis with high shop buildings. There was a lot of everything for sale, from very luxurious to cheap tobacco and liquor stores. Everything can be shopped tax-free. Right in the middle of the bridge there was an impressive work of art by Salvador Dali. My eye fell on the large model train specialty store. Many brass model trains were imported. The pricey looked really priceless.

Nou, ik heb het wel alles gezien na een paar uurtjes. Ik pakte de bus terug naar Encamp. Vanuit daar wilde ik de kabelbaan pakken om het uitzicht te genieten boven de bergen. Helaas zijn de kabelbanen tot juni gesloten. Dus ik pakte mijn auto maar richting het panorama punt Rosa de la Sabina in het oosten van Andorra die open is. Er is gelukkig pas een nieuwe tunnel open met twee buizen richting La Massana, het is de enige waar men 80km/u mocht rijden. Daarna ging het erg steil en slingerend omhoog. Het weer was echt prachtig. Bij het panoramapunt aangekomen waren de locals bezig te barbecquen bij de picknick banken. 

Well, I've seen it all after a few hours. I took the bus back to Encamp. From there I wanted to take the cable car to enjoy the view above the mountains. Unfortunately, the cable cars are closed until June. So I took my car towards the panorama point Rosa de la Sabina in the east of Andorra which is open. Fortunately, a new tunnel has only opened with two tubes towards La Massana, it is the only one where one was allowed to drive 80 km / h. Then it went up very steeply and windingly. The weather was really beautiful. When they arrived at the panorama point, the locals were barbecuing at the picnic benches.

Ik genoot van het uitzicht en ik was ook aan het denken wat ik morgen wilde doen. Ik had het gevoel dat het alles was wat ik gezien had. Had toen voor 3 nachten geboekt in het hotel. Ik nam contact op met een kennis Miriam uit Barcelona wie ik haar met haar zus leerde kennen in Dublin 3 jaar eerder. Zij vond het heel leuk dat ik haar omgeving wilde bezoeken en ze gaf me tips welke aanraders waren. Ik werd er echt enthousiast van. Het enige droevige was hoe ik tegen de aardige oude hotellier moest zeggen dat ik mijn verblijf wilde inkorten. Terug in het hotel liep ik op mijn zwaar gemoed de receptie af en legde het in het Frans uit. Gelukkig werd er begrip getoond, alleen dat ik geen geld terug kan krijgen. Maar zij wilden me wel tegemoet komen met gratis Andorraans diner. Wat een aardig geste. 

I enjoyed the view and I was also thinking about what I wanted to do tomorrow. I felt like it was all I had seen. Had then booked for 3 nights at the hotel. I contacted an acquaintance Miriam from Barcelona whom I met with her sister in Dublin 3 years earlier. She really liked that I wanted to visit her surroundings and she gave me tips which were recommended. It really excited me. The only sad thing was how I had to tell the nice old hotel winch that I wanted to shorten my stay. Back at the hotel, I walked up to the reception in my heavy mood and explained it in French. Fortunately, understanding was shown, only that I can't get a refund. But they wanted to accommodate me with free Andorran dinner. What a nice gesture.

Had nog nooit geitenvlees gegeten. Weinig vlees op de botten maar smaakte erg goed. Na de diner trok ik me even terug in mijn kamer om de volgende overnachting in Spanje te regelen. Omdat het nog geen hoogseizoen was, was het eenvoudig en goedkoper te regelen. Vond een goede overnachting voor twee nachten aan de Costa Brava. Nadat het geregeld was ging ik weer naar Fiësta Manila. Het regende buiten maar gelukkig was de terras overdekt. Dronk een paar biertjes voordat ik ging slapen.

Had never eaten goat meat. Little meat on the bones but tasted very good. After dinner I retreated to my room to arrange the next overnight stay in Spain. Because it was not yet high season, it was easy and cheaper to arrange. Found a good overnight stay for two nights on the Costa Brava. After it was arranged I went back to Fiësta Manila. It was raining outside but luckily the terrace was covered. Drank a few beers before going to sleep.
