Voor het eerst voet gezet in Japan

First steps in Japan

Na een voorspoedig vlucht vanuit Seoel kwam ik op tijd in Narita Airport aan, het was net donker geworden buiten om 18.15 uur plaatselijke tijd. De douanecontrole verliep soepel en wilde mijn koffer afhalen bij de bagage afhaalzone. Maar de bagage afhaalzone lag middenin de verbouwing, dus het kostte me wat moeite om de juiste transportband te vinden. Tot mijn opluchting kwam mijn langverwachte koffer tevoorschijn, want ik had mijn koffer vanuit Beijing laten doorreizen naar Narita Airport. Toen ik naar de uitgang wilde begeven, liep ik verdwaald rond. Door de verbouwing ontbraken er bepaalde wegwijzers, dus moest ik iemand vragen waar de uitgang is. Eenmaal de uitgang gevonden, wilde ik naar het postkantoor. Die bevond zich op 2e verdieping en die was open tot 20.00 uur. Zo haalde ik voor het eerst zelf mooie beroemde toerist stempel van dat postkantoor op terminal 1.

After a successful flight from Seoul I arrived in Narita Airport on time, it had just got dark outside at 6.15 p.m. local time. The customs check went smoothly and wanted to collect my suitcase at the baggage collection area. But the luggage collection zone was in the middle of the renovation, so it took me some effort to find the right conveyor belt. To my relief, my long-awaited suitcase appeared because I had let my suitcase travel from Beijing to Narita Airport. When I wanted to go to the exit, I walked around lost. Due to the renovation, certain signposts were missing, so I had to ask someone where the exit is. Once the exit was found, I wanted to go to the post office. It was on the 2nd floor and it was open until 8 p.m. For example, for the first time I got a beautiful famous tourist stamp from that post office at terminal 1.

To the city centre of Narita

Na het bezoek bij het postkantoor begaf ik me naar het ondergrondse station onder de terminal. Narita Airport heeft 2 stations, een hiervan is van private spoorwegmaatschappij de Keisei Line, de ander van de nationale spoorwegmaatschappij Japan Railways, ik nam het eerste station die me direct naar het centrum van Narita bracht want vanuit het andere station rijdt er sneltrein non-stop direct door naar Tokyo. In het stationshal vond ik een stempelstand, dus ik stempelde het voor eerst in mijn stempelboekje en kaart.

After the visit to the post office I went to the underground station under the terminal. Narita Airport has 2 stations, one of which is from the private railway company Keisei Line, the other from the national railway company Japan Railways, I took the first station that brought me directly to the center of Narita because the other station runs fast train non-stop directly to Tokyo. I found a stamp stand in the station hall, so I stamped it in my stamp book and card for the first time.

Aangekomen in het centrum van Narita vond ik weer zo'n stempelstand in het stationshal bij de uitgang. Weer gestempeld. Buiten moest ik me uitzoeken welke richting ik moet nemen om het Sando Guesthouse te vinden. Gelukkig had ik de locatie opgeslagen in mijn smartphone. Het was ongeveer 1 km doorlopen. Het was 's-avonds gezellig druk doordat de bars en restaurants open waren. Aangekomen in het hostel viel me het op dat het alles op zijn Japans ingericht was. Schoenen uit en slippers aan. Ik deelde de kamer met 4 anderen en de matras lag op de grond.

Arriving in the center of Narita I found another stamp stand in the station hall at the exit. Stamped again. Outside I had to figure out which direction to take to find the Sando Guesthouse. Fortunately I had saved the location in my smartphone. It was approximately 1 km. It was pleasantly busy in the evening because the bars and restaurants were open. When I arrived at the hostel I noticed that everything was decorated in Japanese. Take off shoes and put on slippers. I shared the room with 4 others and the mattress was on the floor.

Ik had er flinke honger ervan gekregen, wilde uiteten gaan. Er was veel keus, dus ik ging naar de traditionele japanse bar/restaurant. De kleine straatjes waren sfeervol verlicht met soort straatverlichting die op lampions leken. Prachtig om te zien.

I was very hungry, wanted to go out for dinner. There was a lot of choice, so I went to the traditional Japanese bar / restaurant. The small streets were attractively lit with street lighting that looked like lanterns. Beautiful to see.

Ik plofte neer op de kurk aan de bar, en kreeg de menu-kaart in het Japans, nix foto's erbij. Gelukkig kende de kok een beetje Engels, hij wilde me kennis maken met meest populaire menu, dus ik zei tegen hem, verras me maar. Het smaakte heerlijk en ik at een beetje onwenning met eetstokjes, gaandeweg ging het vanzelf.

I fell down on the cork at the bar, and got the menu card in Japanese, nix photos. Fortunately the chef knew some English, he wanted to get to know me most popular menu, so I told him, surprise me. It tasted delicious and I ate a bit of habituation with chopsticks, but gradually it came naturally.

Mijn stemming zat er goed in en dronk met genoegen Sapporo-bier. Het viel me op dat er veel soorten flessen saké waren aan de bar. Vroeg om een glaasje saké en smaakte ook lekker, het was niet zo sterk als verwacht. 

My mood was good and I enjoyed drinking Sapporo beer. I noticed that there were many sake bottles at the bar. Asked for a glass of sake and tasted good too, it was not as strong as expected.

Ik kreeg gekookte hele snijbonen voorgeschoteld als typisch japanse snack, dus ik moet bonen eruit halen met mijn tanden terwijl ik de hele steel met eetstokjes vasthield. 

I was served cooked whole string beans as a typical Japanese snack, so I had to take out beans with my teeth while I held the whole handle with chopsticks.

Voldaan maakte ik een mooie avondwandeling richting het hostel. Het was inderdaad mooi om te zien zoals ik me voorgesteld had over Japan. Het regende licht buiten, maar gelukkig werd je niet nat ervan, doordat het nog zwoel was. Terug in het hostel viel ik in slaap, moe van twee dagen reizen via Beijing en Seoel (later meer dit over).

Satisfied I made a nice evening walk towards the hostel. It was indeed nice to see what I had imagined about Japan. It rained lightly outside, but luckily it didn't make you wet because it was still sultry. Back at the hostel I fell asleep, tired from traveling two days via Beijing and Seoul (more on this later).
