Citytrip in Aizuwakamatsu and to Niigata

Nadat ik wakker werd, heb ik er over nagedacht of ik langer in dit ryokan wilde verblijven. Mijn conclusie is beter van niet. Weliswaar had ik best wel medelijden voor die oude eigenares, hoe zij haar ryokan runde. Die was echt gedateerd en uit de tijd, hoewel het redelijk schoon was. En het was ook versleten. Als ik veel geld had zou ik die ryokan best willen overnemen en moderniseren. Ik ging ontbijten en internetten bij de supermarkt 7eleven in de buurt. Had gegoogeld of er goede en goedkopere hostels in de buurt waren. Helaas niet gevonden. Ik wilde ook verder het noorden in reizen. Er zijn geen directe trein- of bus-verbindingen naar het noorden, dus ik moest via Niigata aan de westkust. Reizen naar de oostkust was te onveilig vanwege de radioactiviteit. De ramp in de oostkust van de perfectuur Fukushima ligt nog vers in ieder geheugen. 

After I woke up, I thought about whether I wanted to stay longer at this ryokan. My conclusion is better not. Admittedly, I did feel sorry for the old owner, how she ran her ryokan. It was really dated and out of time, although it was fairly clean. And it was worn out too. If I had a lot of money I would like to take over and modernize that ryokan. I went for breakfast and internet at the 7eleven supermarket nearby. Had googled if there were good and cheaper hostels in the area. Unfortunately not found. I also wanted to travel further north. There are no direct train or bus connections to the north, so I had to go via Niigata on the west coast. Traveling to the east coast was too unsafe because of the radioactivity. The disaster on the east coast of the Fukushima perfection is still fresh in every memory.

Terug in de ryokan schreef ik me uit en pakte mijn koffer in en nam uitgebreid afscheid met die eigenaresse op zijn Japans. Ik liep met mijn grote koffer naar het info centrum voor de toeristen in de buurt en zag die aardige medewerkster weer. Gelukkig waren er fietsen beschikbaar en ik mocht mijn koffer bij haar laten. Fiets huren voor 1 dag kostte me 500 yen voor 1 dag. Er zijn geen verkeerregelving ten aanzien van de fietsverkeer behalve dat je zoveel mogelijk op de stoep moet fietsen. Links of rechts van de weg is toegestaan, wel hebben de voetgangers voorrang. Wilde een citytrip van maken en langs alle postkantoren gaan voor de mooie rode stempels en tevens het Tsuruga-kasteel bezoeken. Het was heerlijk fietsen door de stad met kaarsrechte wegen. Ik hoefde het niet zo stevig te trappen omdat het licht glooiend was. Bij 13 postkantoren in Aizawakamatsu hadden er 11 zulke stempels. Hieronder zijn wat enkele voorbeelden:

Back in the ryokan I unsubscribed and packed my suitcase and said goodbye to the Japanese-style owner. I walked with my large suitcase to the information center for the tourists in the area and saw that nice employee again. Fortunately there were bicycles available and I was allowed to leave my suitcase with her. Renting a bike for 1 day cost me 500 yen for 1 day. There are no traffic regulations with regard to bicycle traffic except that you must cycle on the pavement as much as possible. Left or right of the road is allowed, but the pedestrians have priority. Wanted to make a city trip and go to all post offices for the beautiful red stamps and also visit the Tsuruga castle. It was wonderful cycling through the city with straight roads. I didn't have to kick it so hard because the light was glowing. At 13 post offices in Aizawakamatsu, 11 had such stamps. Below are some examples:

Ik kwam bij het Tsuruga-kasteel aan, een van de mooiste kastelen in Japan. Die werd gebouwd in 1384, was een van de sterkste vestigingen in noordoost Japan. Het werd verwoest in de oorlog tegen de officiele regeringsleger van de keizer tijdens de Meiji-periode. Het werd in 1965 herbouwd en als museum gevestigd.

I arrived at Tsuruga Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Japan. Built in 1384, it was one of the strongest locations in northeast Japan. It was destroyed in the war against the official government army of the emperor during the Meiji period. It was rebuilt in 1965 and established as a museum.

De entree bedroeg 410 yen, nog geen 4 euro. Binnen foto's maken was helaas verboden. Binnen in dat kasteel was er een museum gevestigd, heel interessant om te zien. Je klom via de trappen naar het bovenste gedeelte en je kreeg mooi uitzicht over de hele stad. Bij de souvenirwinkel beneden was er ook een stempel stand.

The entrance fee was 410 yen, less than 4 euros. Taking photos inside was unfortunately forbidden. Inside that castle there was a museum, very interesting to see. You climbed the stairs to the upper part and you had a beautiful view of the entire city. At the souvenir shop downstairs there was also a stamp stand.

Het werd laat in de middag en begon hevig te regenen. Ik keerde kletsnat terug bij het info centrum. Die leuke medewerkster had medelijden met me. Ik kon gelukkig in de toilet droge kleren uit mijn koffer aantrekken en kreeg koppen thee. We praatten veel over alles, heel leuk. Ik bekeek de dienstregeling van de snelwegbus (kosoku bus) naar Niigata vanuit het busterminal vlakbij het station. Ik kon die ruim op tijd halen en ik kreeg van haar wat eten mee voor onderweg. Het regende steeds hevig, dus ik moest tegelijk mijn koffer en paraplu vasthouden. Pakte de stadbus richting het  busterminal. Daar kochte ik een kaartje naar Niigata voor 2060 yen, ca. 19 euro wat niet slecht is. De bus was ook comfortabel zoals de touring bus. De route kun je zien op video's richting Niigata.

It became late in the afternoon and started to rain heavily. I returned soaking wet at the info center. That nice employee felt sorry for me. Fortunately I was able to put dry clothes in my suitcase in the toilet and I got cups of tea. We talked a lot about everything, very nice. I looked at the timetable of the highway bus (kosoku bus) to Niigata from the bus terminal near the station. I was able to get it well in time and I got some food from her for the trip. It was always raining heavily, so I had to hold my suitcase and umbrella at the same time. Grabbed the city bus towards the bus terminal. I bought a ticket to Niigata for 2060 yen, about 19 euros, which is not bad. The bus was also comfortable like the touring bus. You can see the route on videos richting Niigata.

Wat me echt verbaasde dat de autosnelweg bijna helemaal enkelbaans is, mét rijbaanscheiding. Af en toe zijn er wat inhaalstroken. Er werd ook tol geheven en de maxinum snelheid bedroeg 70 km per uur, in sommige gevallen 50 km per uur in de tunnels. Maar iedereen reed harder dan toegestaan. De wetgeving voor snelheidslimieten is heel oud en is tot nu toe niet aangepast maar er is stilzwijgend een marge ingebouwd voor 20 km boven de toegestane snelheidslimiet op snelwegen zonder dat er boete uitgeschreven wordt en punten in japans rijbewijs afgetrokken worden.

Which really surprised me that the motorway is almost entirely single-lane, with roadway separation. Occasionally there are some catch-up lanes. Tolls were also levied and the maxinum speed was 70 km per hour, in some cases 50 km per hour in the tunnels. But everyone drove faster than allowed. The speed limit legislation is very old and has not been adjusted so far, but a margin has been built in for 20 km above the permitted speed limit on motorways without penalty being imposed and points in Japanese driver's license deducted.

Ik had het hostel geboekt via Airbnb, dus niet meer via booking.com of hotel.com. Want deze beide sites tonen nauwelijks goedkopere hostels in Japan. Airbnb is vrij uitgebreid. De bus kwam bij het station van Niigata aan en ik pakte een taxi, had de adres in het Japans aan de oudere chauffeur getoond. Toch wist hij het niet precies waar het lag en voerde in bij de navigatie computer. Ondanks de navigatie computer verdwaalde de chauffeur in de kleine straatjes. Hij belde naar het centrale voor een precieze locatie bepaling. Tenslotte vond hij de Agosa-hostel aan de overkant van de rivier. De meter liep tot ruim boven 2000 yen. Door zijn fout hoefde ik maar de helft te betalen, dus rond 10 euro voor 5 km afstand.

I booked the hostel through Airbnb, so no longer through booking.com or hotel.com. Because both of these sites hardly show any cheaper hostels in Japan. Airbnb is quite extensive. The bus arrived at Niigata station and I picked up a taxi, had shown the address to the older driver in Japanese. Yet he did not know exactly where it was and introduced it to the navigation computer. Despite the navigation computer, the driver got lost in the small streets. He called the central office for a precise location determination. Finally he found the Agosa hostel on the other side of the river. The meter ran well above 2000 yen. Because of his mistake I only had to pay half, so around 10 euros for 5 km away.

De eigenaar leek me een oude en zwijgzame meester en sprak nauwelijks Engels, maar erg vriendelijk voor me. Ik kreeg een kamer met stapelbed, die niet bezet was en ik had geluk dat ik op de onderste bed kon slapen. Nadat ik me geinstalleerd had kon ik wat eten en bier halen bij de Family Mart supermarkt halen. Het regende inmiddels niet meer en kon me buiten ontspannen voordat ik naar bed ging.

The owner seemed like an old and silent master and hardly spoke English, but very friendly to me. I was given a room with a bunk bed that was not occupied and I was lucky that I could sleep on the lower bed. After I installed myself, I was able to get some food and beer from the Family Mart supermarket. It was no longer raining and I could relax outside before I went to bed.
