Exploring of Niigata

Na een goede nachtrust was ik uitgerust wakker. Ging ontbijten bij de 7eleven supermarkt. Terug in het hostel kon ik een goede fiets voor 100 yen per dag huren, ongehoord goedkoop voor nog minder dan 1 euro! Ik had de keus tussen ATB en toerfiets. Koos voor de laatste. Bij het fietsen door de straten viel het me op dat er bij sommige complete straten, de stoepen een afdak hadden, wat het erg handig is bij regen of sneeuw.

After a good night's sleep I woke up rested. Went for breakfast at the 7eleven supermarket. Back at the hostel I could rent a good bike for 100 yen a day, unbelievably cheap for less than 1 euro! I had the choice between ATB and touring bike. Opted for the latter. When cycling through the streets I noticed that on some complete streets, the sidewalks had a shelter, which is very useful in rain or snow.

Niigata is op zich niet zo bijzonder toeristisch, de stad heeft bijna 1 miljoen inwoners. Heel bekend is de Furumachi, die oude stad betekent, een lange winkelgalerij. Daar lagen de beelden van de beroemde japanse honkballers, een soort walk of fame dus.

Niigata is not particularly touristy in itself, the city has almost 1 million inhabitants. Well known is the Furumachi, which means old city, a long shopping gallery. There were the images of the famous Japanese baseball players, a kind of walk of fame.
 

Het was heerlijk kuieren langs Furumachi, de interessante winkels bezocht. Bijv. een winkel die schooluniformen op maat maakt en verkocht.

It was wonderful to stroll along Furumachi, visit the interesting shops. E.g. a shop that custom-made and sold school uniforms.

Er bevond zich ook een Manga-academie die striptekenaars opleidt. Er wordt jaarlijks een manga competitie Niigata Manga Tiasyo gehouden. Ik ben niet zo'n liefhebber van de manga stripboekjes, maar de japanners verslinden ze helemaal. De eigenaar van Agosa-hostel heeft een grote verzameling manga stripboekjes verdeeld over een paar kasten in de gemeenschappelijke huiskamer. In de boekenwinkels zijn er afdeling compleet gevuld met manga stripboekjes beginnend voor de jeugd en eindigd voor de volwassenen, je raadt het wel.

There was also a Manga academy that trained cartoonists. There is an annual Nianga Manga Tiasyo manga competition. I am not a fan of manga comic books, but the Japanese devour them completely. The owner of Agosa-hostel has a large collection of manga comic books spread over a few cupboards in the common living room. In the book stores there are sections completely filled with manga comic books starting for the youth and ending for the adults, you guessed it.

Ik ging naar het centraal postkantoor voor de mooie stempels.

I went to the central post office for the beautiful stamps.

Ging weer de Furumachi winkelgalerij om te lunchen, het was verrassend goedkoop, koffie met lekker broodgebak voor 450 yen. Daarna fietste ik lekker ontspannen door de buitenwijken, op zoek naar andere postkantoren. Alhoewel Niigata meerdere postkantoren heeft, hebben ze niet veel van zulke mooie rode stempels. Ik had maar eentje weten te bemachtigen.

Went again to the Furumachi shopping gallery for lunch, it was surprisingly cheap, coffee with tasty bread for 450 yen. Then I cycled nice and relaxed through the suburbs, looking for other post offices. Although Niigata has several post offices, they do not have many such beautiful red stamps. I only managed to get one.

Ik stopte in een park met tempel waar ik voor 100 yen geluksbriefje uit de grabbelton kon pakken. Bij het openen van die geluksbriefje kon ik lezen dat ik wisselend geluk en succes kon vinden gevolgd door wat tegenslagen in Engelse taal, als je maar geduld voor hebt, dat is zeker voor mij van toepassing.

I stopped in a park with a temple where I could grab a lucky note for 100 yen from the grab bag. When opening that lucky letter I could read that I could find varying happiness and success followed by some setbacks in English language, if you have patience for that, that certainly applies to me.

Toen werd het 's-avonds en ik had er honger van gekregen, ging ik weer de Furumachi winkelgalerij op zoek naar een restaurant. Mijn oog viel op een restaurant in de kelder die gespecialiseerd in gerechten uit Hokkiado waar ik later er naar toe zou gaan. Vooral voor de sashimi, de puurste vorm van sushi, voor 900 yen. Mijn mond ging watertanden. Zo heerlijk was dat, gevolgd door typische hokkiado aardappelgerecht en puddinggerecht.

Then it became evening, and it made me hungry, and I went back to the Furumachi shopping gallery to find a restaurant. My eye fell on a restaurant in the basement that specialized in dishes from Hokkiado where I would go later. Especially for sashimi, the purest form of sushi, for 900 yen. My mouth went mouth watering. That was so delicious, followed by a typical hokkiado potato dish and pudding dish.

Na afloop was mijn buik goed gevuld en maakte een praatje met de kok. In Japan is het not done om fooi te geven. Meestal is het al verwerkt in de kosten, maar je doet een kok of de ober grootste genoegen compliment in het Japans te maken, nl. oishi da tsu te wat het betekent dat het lekker was. We wisselden onze visitiekaartjes uit op Japanse manier als aandenken.

Afterwards my belly was well filled and I had a chat with the cook. In Japan it is not done to tip. Usually it is already included in the costs, but you do a chef or the waiter great pleasure to make a compliment in Japanese, namely oishi da tsu te what it means that it was tasty. We exchanged our visitation tickets in a Japanese way as a memento.

Ik ging daarna rond fietsen in de oude uitgaanswijk in de smalle straatjes, mooie foto's te maken vooral van barretjes en restaurantjes met gekleurde lampioens.

I then went cycling around in the old entertainment district in the narrow streets, to take beautiful pictures especially of bars and restaurants with colored lanterns.

Buiten de kleine straatjes waar de auto nauwelijks er in past bevonden zich gebouwen met veel neon-lichten. Ik ben er persoonlijk gek op, want ik had vroeger een paar neon-lichten thuis. Jammer dat er bijna geen neonlichten meer zijn in Nederland.

Outside the small streets where the car barely fits, there were buildings with lots of neon lights. I personally love it, because I used to have a few neon lights at home. It is a pity that there are almost no neon lights in the Netherlands.

Het werd laat en ging langs de supermarkt 7eleven voor wat blikken bier. Terug in het hostel genoot ik na met blikje bier buiten voordat ik naar bed ging. Had een japanse slapie erbij boven mijn bed.

It became late and went to the supermarket 7eleven for some cans of beer. Back at the hostel, I enjoyed drinking beer outside before going to bed. Had a Japanese slap with it above my bed.
