Citytrip in Hakodate

Na een goede nachtrust ging ik ontbijten in de supermarkt 7eleven in de buurt. Daarna terug naar het hostel waar ik mijn kleren liet wassen voor 500 yen. Terwijl mijn kleren gewassen werden ging ik een ochtendwandeling maken naar de visserijhaven. Ik zag weer een mooi beschilderde putdeksel.

After a good night's sleep, I went to breakfast at the 7eleven supermarket nearby. Then back to the hostel where I had my clothes washed for 500 yen. While my clothes were being washed I went for a morning walk to the fishing port. I saw a beautifully painted manhole cover again.

De visserijhaven was beschermd door de betonnen zeewering die voorkomt dat er hoge golven er over heen stroomden. De visserboten waren speciaal uitgerust om pijlinktvissen te vangen. De vissers werken vooral 's-nachts met felle lampen die pijlinktvissen naar boven lokten. En dan hebbes! 

The fishing port was protected by the concrete seawall that prevents high waves from flowing over it. The fishing boats were specially equipped to catch squids. The fishermen mainly work at night with bright lights that attracted squids. And then have it!

Ging langs de scheepswerven, er worden nog steeds grote schepen gebouwd en gerepareerd.

Went past the shipyards, large ships are still being built and repaired.

Liep langs de kade en zag interessante gebouwen die eigenlijk niet in Japan thuis hoorden. Die zijn afkomsting van de buitenlandse mogenheden die vanaf de Meiji-periode gebouwd werden om goederen op te slaan, te wonen, etc. Hakodate was een van de twee Japanse haven die open ging voor de niet-japanse schepen. Er was zelfs een complete wijk voor de buitenlanders gebouwd met kerken en een begraafplaats. Daarin vestigden vooral de westerse mogenheden, Russen en Chinezen.

Walked along the quay and saw interesting buildings that didn't actually belong in Japan. They come from the foreign powers that were built from the Meiji period to store goods, live, etc. Hakodate was one of two Japanese ports that opened for non-Japanese ships. There was even a complete neighborhood for foreigners built with churches and a cemetery. The Western powers, the Russians and the Chinese settled there.

Toen ik terug in het hostel keerde waren mijn kleren schoon en droog. Ik wilde een fiets huren van Isao. Isao was nergens te bekennen en ik nam een kijkje in het schuur. Daarin stonden wat fietsen maar dan in slechte staat. Ik dacht, ik doe dat maar niet. In plaats daarvan kocht ik een dagkaart voor de tram, 600 yen ca. 5 euro. Pakte de tram naar het station. Vlakbij het station was er een echte foodmarket met plaatselijke lekkernijen, zoals grote slakken en pijlinktvissen, gegrild. Tevens waren er ook lokaal gebrouwen bier om te proeven. Ik had helaas nog geen echte honger of dorst omdat het nog te vroeg was. Ging naar het museumschip die vroeger als treinveerboot diende, een tegenhanger die van Aomori. 

When I returned to the hostel my clothes were clean and dry. I wanted to rent a bike from Isao. Isao was nowhere to be seen and I took a look at the barn. There were some bikes in it but in poor condition. I thought I wouldn't do that. Instead I bought a day ticket for the tram, 600 yen approx. 5 euros. Picked up the tram to the station. Near the station there was a real food market with local delicacies, such as large snails and squids, grilled. There were also locally brewed beers to taste. Unfortunately I was not really hungry or thirsty because it was too early. Went to the museum ship that used to serve as a train ferry, a counterpart to Aomori.

In tegenstelling tot de Hakkoda Maru in Aomori was er niet echt veel te zien. Wel heb ik een mooie stempel weten te bemachtigen.

Unlike the Hakkoda Maru in Aomori, there wasn't really much to see. I have managed to get a nice stamp.

Licht teleurgesteld ging ik weer aan wal. Vlakbij is er wijk met vismarkt met vele restaurantjes waar er krabben en pijlinktvissen geserveerd werd. Heel interessant om te zien. Ik zag een pijlinktvis "levend" in stukken gesneden worden. Zelfs als het hoofd eraf ging, gingen de tentakels door met bewegen. De kok had er zichtbaar moeite om die in bedwang te houden doordat het probeerde van de tafel te kruipen.

Slightly disappointed I went ashore again. Nearby there is a neighborhood with fish market with many restaurants where crabs and squids were served. Very interesting to see. I saw a squid being cut "alive" into pieces. Even when the head went off, the tentacles continued to move. The cook was visibly struggling to control it as the tentacles tried to crawl off the table.

Overal stonden er levende krabben uitgestald in de aquariums. Er wordt vooral 2 soorten krabben verkocht, een grote rode koningskrab, bekend van Deadliest Catch van Discovery, een kleine bruine "harige" krab. Verder was er bakken met pijlinktvissen waar men die zelf kan proberen te vangen. Als het lukte werd het klaargemaakt om die op te eten. 

Living crabs were displayed everywhere in the aquariums. There are mainly 2 types of crabs sold, a large red king crab, known from Deadliest Catch from Discovery, a small brown "hairy" crab. There was also trays of squids where you can try to catch them yourself. If it succeeded it was prepared to eat it.

Bij de vismarkt was er allerlei soorten vis en schaaldieren te koop. Grote krab was erg duur, 8000 yen, terwijl de levende kleine krab 4000 yen kostte. Kleine kist met gekookte grote krabbepoten 10.000 yen, ca. 90 euro. De kop van de tonijn werd ook te koop aangeboden.

All kinds of fish and shellfish were for sale at the fish market. Large crab was very expensive, 8000 yen, while the living small crab cost 4000 yen. Small box with cooked large crab legs 10,000 yen, around 90 euros. The head of the tuna was also offered for sale.

Ging lunchen met bier in het vismarkthal. Het was lekker goedkoop alles voor 580 yen inclusief bier.

Went for lunch with beer in the fish market hall. It was nice and cheap for 580 yen including beer.

Voldaan pakte ik de tram richting de wijk Goryokaku die op een heuvel ligt, 5 km verder op. Goed dat ik geen fiets had gehuurd, dus ik hoefde niet naar boven te klimmen, de tram doet al voor mij, haha. Bij het uitstappen zag ik een toren in de buurt. Het is de Goryokaku-toren die 107 meter hoog was, maar die een prachtig uitzicht bood over heel Hakodate. De entree bedroeg 900 yen, maar het was waard om die te bezoeken. Het had ook maar liefst 4 mooie stempels.

Satisfied, I picked up the tram to the Goryokaku district, which is located on a hill 5 km away. Good that I did not rent a bike, so I did not have to climb up, the tram is already doing for me, haha. When I got out, I saw a tower nearby. It is the Goryokaku tower that was 107 meters high, but that offered a beautiful view over all of Hakodate. The entrance fee was 900 yen, but it was worth visiting. It also had no less than 4 beautiful stamps.

Boven op de toren had je prachtig uitzicht op de Goryokaku-fort. Het was een bastion die gebouwd was tussen 1857-1866 tijdens de Republiek Ezo, die van de keizerlijk Japan afscheidde. Die republiek werd gevormd door de voormalige leden van de shogunaat, die Japan wilden moderniseren en tegelijk de samoerai-traditie wilden behouden. Helaas duurde het maar kort, het bastion werd veroverd door het keizerlijke leger. Er stonden vitrines met schaalmodellen die het tijdperk uitbeeldde. Heel interessant om te zien.

On top of the tower you had a beautiful view of the Goryokaku fort. It was a bastion built between 1857-1866 during the Republic of Ezo, which separated from Imperial Japan. That republic was formed by the former members of the shogunate, who wanted to modernize Japan and at the same time preserve the samurai tradition. Unfortunately it only lasted a short time, the bastion was conquered by the imperial army. There were showcases with scale models that depicted the era. Very interesting to see.

Beneden in de toren ging ik naar het bastion. Het was heet in de middag. Ik keek er rond en het was een mooie omgeving maar het werd me te druk door de vele groepen schooljeugd die op excursie waren, zo kon ik geen mooie foto's maken. 

Down in the tower I went to the bastion. It was hot in the afternoon. I looked around and it was a beautiful area but it became too busy for me because of the many groups of school children who were on an excursion, so I couldn't take beautiful pictures.

Ik daalde weer naar de baai van Hakodate wat het door de zeewind koeler was. Daarna klom ik weer de heuvel op en ging naar de shinto-tempel en wilde voor mijn voormalige werkgever die net overleden was te bidden. Kreeg de trieste bericht van zijn zoon afgelopen nacht. Ik vroeg een paar dames die in de tempel aanwezig waren hoe ik het moet bidden. Gewoon op zelfde manier bidden net als bij de boeddhitisch tempel. Twee keer klappen en twee keer buigen. Ik schreef ook zijn naam op de register, zodat het herinnerd blijft.

I descended again to the bay of Hakodate which was cooler by the sea breeze. Then I climbed the hill again and went to the shinto temple and wanted to pray for my former employer who had just died. Got the sad message from his son last night. I asked a few ladies who were present in the temple how to pray. Just pray in the same way as with the Buddhist temple. Clapping twice and bending twice. I also wrote his name on the register so that it remains remembered.

Boven op de heuvel waren er veel westerse gebouwen en kerken, ook Russisch orthodox kerk. 

At the top of the hill there were many western buildings and churches, also Russian Orthodox church.

Ging weer terug naar het hostel om een siësta te houden totdat het 's-avonds wat koeler werd. Toen keek ik op de prikbord in het hostel over de aanbevolen restaurants in de buurt. Ik koos voor een kleine traditionele sushi tent in de buurt. Aangezien dat de toeristenseizoen ten einde was, was het toch niet meer zo druk. Ik liep in die sushi tent binnen en was de enige gast. De oude sushi meester vertoonde zijn kunsten aan de bar met vele soorten messen. Hij gaf me geheime tips hoe ik sushi moet eten. Alles was heerlijk vers. Na het eten praatten we wat bij. Zijn vrouw gaf me spontaan een stempel en ze stempelde in mijn stempelboekje. Heel leuk en gezellig voor 1080 yen, maar dan sloten warme thee erbij.

Went back to the hostel to have a siesta until it got cooler in the evening. Then I looked at the notice board in the hostel about the recommended restaurants in the area. I chose a small traditional sushi tent nearby. Since that was the end of the tourist season, it wasn't that busy anymore. I walked into that sushi tent and was the only guest. The old sushi master showed his skills at the bar with many kinds of knives. He gave me secret tips on how to eat sushi. Everything was wonderfully fresh. After dinner we caught up. His wife spontaneously gave me a stamp and she stamped in my stamp book. Very nice and cozy for 1080 yen, but then hot tea was included.

Toen ik weer naar buiten ging zag ik een mooi aanblik, volle maan op de Hakodate-berg. Het was een foto waard.

When I went outside again I saw a beautiful sight, full moon on the Hakodate mountain. It was worth a photo.

Terug naar het hostel kocht ik wat bier bij de drugstore en dronk buiten het hostel op voordat ik naar bed ging.

Back to the hostel I bought some beer at the drug store and drank outside the hostel before I went to bed.
