Naar Nikko

To Nikko

Was vroeg opgestaan en had mijn koffer ingepakt. Voordat ik het Sando Guesthouse verliet maakte ik foto's voor Susanne (zie blogs over Denemarken) hoe de typische Japanse inrichting eruit zag.

I got up early and packed my suitcase. Before I left the Sando Guesthouse I took pictures for Susanne (see blogs about Denmark) what the typical Japanese interior looked like.

Ik ging voor het eerst op zijn Japans ontbijten. Eerst koop je ontbijtpakket en bestelt koffie in een supermarkt. Die warmt het pakket op in een magnetronoven voor je. Kostte me 600 yen, ca. 5 euro. Ik at het op buiten op het stationsplein, uiteraard met eetstokjes. Smaakte niet slecht.

Voor de reis naar Nikko met de gewone lokale trein en Shinkansen moest je twee aparte kaartjes bestellen. 1 kaartje is het eigenlijke totale afstand van Narita naar Nikko. De andere kaartje is de reservering voor een zitplaats bij de Shinkansen vanaf Tokyo Centraal en Utsunomiya, met vermelding de tijdstip van vertrek, welk wagon en zitplaats. Hoewel de beide kaartjes identiek zijn, zijn de bedrukking anders. Dus opletten dat je niet de verkeerde kaartje bij de poort instopt. Anders ben je dat voor altijd kwijt. Totaal kostte het 6860 yen, zo'n 60 euro voor in totaal 3 uren treinreis. De eerste lokaal/express-trein vertrok vanuit Narita JR-station. Die stopte eerst bij het stations in de buurt daarna ging het als sneltrein door naar Tokyo Centraal. De trein was tot de nok vol gevuld met forens, gelukkig net niet opeen gepakt als een sardineblikje. 

For the trip to Nikko with the regular local train and Shinkansen you had to order two separate tickets. 1 ticket is the actual total distance from Narita to Nikko. The other ticket is the reservation for a seat at the Shinkansen from Tokyo Central and Utsunomiya, stating the time of departure, which wagon and seat. Although the two cards are identical, the printing is different. So make sure you don't put the wrong ticket at the gate. Otherwise you will lose it forever. It cost a total of 6860 yen, around 60 euros for a total of 3 hours of train travel. The first local / express train departed from Narita JR station. He first stopped at the stations in the neighborhood, then went on as a fast train to Tokyo Central. The train was filled to the brim full of commuter, fortunately just not packed like a sardine tin.

Aangekomen bij Tokyo Centraal station, bewogen de forens richting de uitgang over de meerdere roltrappen. Het station heeft meerdere hallen verdeeld op 3 niveau's helemaal gevuld met winkels en restaurants. Ik had ruim de tijd genoeg om alles goed rond te kijken, vond ook een stempel stand en een interessante postbus, als je de post er in gooit kreeg het een mooie rode stempel.

Arriving at Tokyo Central Station, the commuter moved toward the exit across the multiple escalators. The station has several halls divided on 3 levels, completely filled with shops and restaurants. I had plenty of time to have a good look around, also found a stamp stand and an interesting post box, when you put the mail in it got a nice red stamp.

Ik dronk daarna koffie met gebak voordat ik me naar de speciale bovenste perron voor de Shinkansen begaf. Die is ook weer afgeschermd met poortjes, dus ik moest de tweede kaartje erin doen, toen ging het poortje open. Eenmaal op het perron bevond zich 0-km markering op de vloer, wat het betekent dat een centraal vertrekpunt voor alle Shinkansen die naar alle uithoeken van Japan gingen. Verder waren er merkwaardige markeringen. Als studerend Lean Master begreep ik het waarom dat betekent. 

I then drank coffee with cake before I went to the special upper platform for the Shinkansen. It is also protected with gates, so I had to put the second card in, then the gate opened. Once on the platform, there was a 0-km mark on the floor, which means that it was a central starting point for all Shinkansen that went to every corner of Japan. There were also strange markings. As a Lean Master student, I understood why that means.

Een korte uitleg: Je hebt 2 mogelijkheden om met de Shinkansen te reizen, gereserveerde zitplaats of ongereserveerde zitplaats. De roze en oranje borden geven dat aan. De witte borden geven de kop (nummer 1) en de staart (nummer 17) van de Shinkansen aan. Aan de rand staan welk wagon, gereserveerd of niet aan. De Shinkansen stopt precies op juiste plek. Maar niet getreuerd want de volgende Shinkansen komt over 5 à 6 minuten aan.

A short explanation: You have 2 options for traveling with the Shinkansen, reserved seat or unreserved seat. The pink and orange plates indicate that. The white plates indicate the head (number 1) and the tail (number 17) of the Shinkansen. At the edge are indicated which wagon, reserved or not. The Shinkansen stops exactly at the right place. When you find which wagon you need to take, take place on the indicated row. If you have to take the first Shinkansen, you stand in the first row. The second, and so on. When the first Shinkansen has left, simply slide to the first row. Gambling is for the unreserved seat. When it is busy, you are just out of luck. But don't worry because the next Shinkansen will arrive in 5 to 6 minutes.

Toen ik in de Shinkansen plaats nam, vertrok hij rustig en reed in een normale snelheid door Tokyo. Toen de buitenwijken voorbij ging het in volle vaart van 300 km per uur verder. Je merkt er eigenlijk niet zo veel ervan, niks zo sensationeel als het opstijgen van een vliegtuig. Het voelde zo doodstil aan, terwijl het landschap snel voorbij raasde. De Shinkansen reed op een viaduct over de volle lengte. Weldra kwam het snel in Utsunomiya aan, het overstapstation voor lokale trein naar Nikko. Weer van kaartje veranderen, de eerste kaartje gebruiken bij een aparte poortje. De perron waar Shinkansen stopte is helemaal boven, terwijl de lokale treinen beneden waren. De spoorwijdtes zijn ook verschillend. Shinkansen reed op normaalspoor terwijl de andere treinen op 1372 mm wijdte reden. De lokale trein naar Nikko was apart geverfd, roodbruin met "antieke" binneninrichting. (zie video's Shinkansen 1 tot 5).

When I took a seat in the Shinkansen, he left quietly and drove through Tokyo at a normal speed. When the suburbs passed it went at full speed of 300 km per hour. You actually don't notice so much of it, nothing as sensational as taking off an airplane. It felt so still, while the landscape quickly rushed past. The Shinkansen rode on a full-length viaduct. Soon it arrived in Utsunomiya, the transfer station for local train to Nikko. Switch cards again, use the first card at a separate gate. The platform where Shinkansen stopped is all the way up, while the local trains were downstairs. The track widths are also different. Shinkansen ran on the normal track while the other trains ran at 1372 mm width. The local train to Nikko was painted separately, red-brown with "antique" interior design. Toen de trein in Nikko aankwam, was het eindstation pastelroze geverfd. Verder was er ook een stempelstand.

Tot mijn verbaziging is er paar 100 meter verder op een ander eindstation, namelijk van de private spoorwegmaatschappij Tobu-Line, is in chalet-stijl uitgevoerd maar stukken groter, want er vertrokken ook Shinkansen-achtige sneltreinen naar allerlei richtingen. Vond ook een stempelstand.

Ik hoefde maar een stukje te lopen naar de volgende hostel Tora Guesthouse waar ik hartelijk verwelkomd werd door jongeman die Keisuke heet. Alles is echt Japans ingericht, met antiek. Ook de plafonds en deuren zijn alleen op Japanners gericht, dat betekende dat ik net mijn hoofd de bovenste gedeelte van de deuren paste. Nadat ik me geinstalleerd had in een kamer met 4 bedden, dus ook op de grond, had ik honger gekregen. Keisuke had mij een goeie ramen tent in de buurt aanbevolen. Het was zo'n 10 minuten verder op lopen op de hoofdstraat richting het beroemde tempelcomplex en de brug. Ramen smaakte niet slecht, dat voor 660 yen, rond 5 euro. Uiteraard met onbeperkt gratis ijskoud water.

I only had to walk a bit to the next hostel Tora Guesthouse where I was warmly welcomed by a young man named Keisuke. Everything is really Japanese, with antiques. The ceilings and doors are also aimed at Japanese people, which meant that I just fit my head in the upper part of the doors. After I installed myself in a room with 4 beds, so also on the floor, I got hungry. Keisuke had recommended a good ramen tent in the area. It was about 10 minutes further on on the main street towards the famous temple complex and the bridge. Ramen did not taste bad, that for 660 yen, around 5 euros. Of course with unlimited free ice cold water.

Het werd 's-avonds laat en ik haalde 2 halve liter blikken Aicha Dry Beer voor 584 yen bij het 24-uurs Family Mart supermarkt, die ook gratis WiFi aanbood. Het was een mooie wandeling terug naar het hostel waarna ik effe op de terras ging zitten te drinken voordat ik naar bed ging.

It was getting late at night and I got 2 half a liter cans of Aicha Dry Beer for 584 yen at the 24-hour Family Mart supermarket, which also offered free Wi-Fi. It was a nice walk back to the hostel after which I sat down drinking on the terrace before I went to bed.
