Meerijden met de stoomtrein

Riding with steamtrain

Nadat ik opgestaan was maakte Keisuke lekker Japans ontbijt voor me. Ik keek allerlei toeritische folders door. Ene folder viel me op, nl. die van de stoomtrein vanuit Schimo-Imaichi richting Kinugawa-Onsen rijdt. Mijn interesse werd gewekt, helaas is de tekst helemaal in het Japans. Ik bekeek het goed en vond de vertrektijden. Het moest vanuit het station Shimo-Imaichi via de Tobu-Line vertrekken, niet van die JR (staatsspoorwegmaatschappij). Ik ging meteen naar het Tobu-Line station en reserveerde een kaartje voor de stoomtrein. Haalde op tijd de aansluitende lokale trein richting Shimo-Imaichi. Het viel me op dat de binneninrichting als 1e klasse uitgevoerd was. En ik zag Shinkansen-achtige treinen aankomen en vertrekken. Zij rijden bepaald niet hard doordat de private spoorlijnen in de Tochigi Perfecture grotendeels enkelsporig zijn, maar dat die treinen kleinere stations konden passeren zonder te wachten op tegenkomende treinen.

After I got up, Keisuke made me a delicious Japanese breakfast. I looked through all kinds of tourist leaflets. One brochure struck me, namely that the steam train runs from Schimo-Imaichi towards Kinugawa-Onsen. My interest was aroused, unfortunately the text is entirely in Japanese. I looked at it well and found the departure times. It had to depart from the Shimo-Imaichi station via the Tobu-Line, not from that JR (state railway company). I immediately went to the Tobu-Line station and reserved a ticket for the steam train. Got the connecting local train to Shimo-Imaichi on time. I noticed that the interior design was designed as a 1st class. And I saw Shinkansen-like trains coming and leaving. They are certainly not running fast because the private railways in the Tochigi Perfecture are largely single-track, but that those trains could pass smaller stations without waiting for encountering trains.

Aangekomen in Shimo-Imaichi had ik ruim 1 uur de tijd voordat de stoomtrein vertrok. Maakte foto's van de treinen die stopten. Verder had ik een stempel op mijn boekje gestempeld. Er was ook een informatiecentrum met betrekking tot de stoomtrein, daar was er heel mooi gedetailleerde modelspoor in N-schaal (op zijn Japans schaal 1 op 150).

Arrived in Shimo-Imaichi I had more than 1 hour before the steam train left. Took pictures of the trains that stopped. I also stamped a stamp on my booklet. There was also an information center with regard to the steam train, there was very nicely detailed model railroad in N-scale (on its Japanese scale 1 in 150).

Toen werd het tijd om me naar het perron te begeven. Maakte ook foto's van de omgeving van het station en van de stoomlocomotief.

Then it was time to go to the platform. Also took pictures of the area around the station and of the steam locomotive.

Toen de stoomlocomotief de wagons aankoppelde werd het tijd om in te stappen in een luxeuze wagon. Het werd goed gevuld door echte stoomliefhebbers en Japanse toeristen. Al het personeel zwaaide ons uit bij het vertrek. Nauwelijks begon de stoomtrein te rijden of we werden bestormend door de hostessen die foto's wilden maken of bepaalde souvenirs te verkopen. Vond mij persoonlijk te storend en zei beleefd in het Japans Iie, arigato (nee, dank u). De stoomtrein reed erg langzaam, zo'n 30 km per uur en stopte bij alle stations, om te wachten totdat de tegenkomende treinen gepasseerd werden. Tot mijn verbazing zwaaiden de omstanders buiten het spoor naar ons, zelfs van de autobestuurders die op een overgang wachtten, ook door de wegwerkers die op een naastgelegen weg aan het werk waren! Oh ja, de honkballers op een naast gelegen veld waren gestopt met spelen en zwaaiden naar ons, let op de detail van de foto onder. (bekijk de video's van SL1 tot  SL5).

When the steam locomotive coupled the wagons, it was time to board a luxury wagon. It was well stocked by real steam lovers and Japanese tourists. All the staff waved goodbye to us upon departure. Hardly did the steam train start to run until we were stormed by the hostesses who wanted to take pictures or sell certain souvenirs. Personally found me too disturbing and politely said in Japanese Iie, arigato (no thank you). The steam train was running very slowly, about 30 km per hour and stopped at all stations, waiting for the passing trains to pass. To my surprise, the bystanders waved at us off the track, even from the car drivers waiting for a transition, also from the road workers working on an adjacent road! Oh yes, the baseball players on an adjacent field had stopped playing and waved at us, note the detail of the photo below. (watch the videos from SL1 to SL5).

Voelde mij best geïrriteerd en zwaaide minzaam als een statige koningin terug. Zo kon ik niet echt genieten van die rit. Dat is zo'n wel genoeg geweest voor me, voortaan alleen "off-line" foto's maken ipv. mee te rijden. De stoomtreinmaatschappij maakt er echt een entertainement van. Na een rit die bijna 1 uur duurde, die stopte zelfs bij speciale stationnetjes die direct toegang bood aan diverse attractie-parken zoals Edo Wonderland (oude naam van Tokyo als thema) en Tobu World Square, hetzelfde als Madurodam, maar dan over de hele wereld in minatuur). Ik had er geen behoefte aan en de prijzen liggen erg hoog.

That has been enough for me, from now on only taking "off-line" photos instead of. to ride along. The steam train company really makes it an entertainment. After a ride that lasted almost 1 hour, it even stopped at special stations that offered direct access to various attraction parks such as Edo Wonderland (old name of Tokyo as theme) and Tobu World Square, the same as Madurodam, but all over the world in miniature). I didn't need it and the prices are very high.

In Kinugawa-Onsen, een beroemde kuuroord kon je gratis je voeten in een openbare bad dompelen. Ik zag op het stationsplein mensen staan in een kring. Toen ik dichterbij naderde zag ik iemand circus-acts met een aapje doen. Ik nam stiekem foto er van, want ik wil niet toezien en mee klappen en wat geld geven. 

In Kinugawa-Onsen, a famous spa, you could immerse your feet in a public bath for free. I saw people standing in a circle on the station square. As I approached closer, I saw someone doing circus acts with a monkey. I secretly took a photo of it, because I don't want to watch and clap and give some money.

Liep er voorbij, kwam bij het toeristisch informatiebureau. Binnen werd ik onthaald met stapel folders maar alles was in het Japans. Wel vond ik 5 soorten stempels, dus ik maakte er gebruik van. Ik werd ook uitgenodigd om de vuurwerkshow 's-avonds bij te wonen. Leek me leuk, maar ik moest Keisuke laten weten dat ik later kwam ivm. de sluitingstijd van het hostel. Ik appte hem, maar hij liet zich niet horen. Dus effe afwachten. Bij het verlaten kreeg ik de waaier mee wat het handig is bij zo'n warme weer. 

Walked past, came to the tourist information office. Inside I was welcomed with a pile of leaflets but everything was in Japanese. I did find 5 types of stamps, so I used them. I was also invited to attend the fireworks show in the evening. I thought it would be nice, but I had to let Keisuke know that I came later because of it. the closing time of the hostel. I whatsapped him, but he didn't let himself be heard. So wait and see. When leaving I got the fan what it is useful in such a warm weather.

Toen werd het tijd om te lunchen. Niet ver van het toeristisch informatiebureau zag ik een restaurant met diverse soorten Japanse variant van schnitzelgerechten maar dan wel voorgesneden ivm. eetstokjes. Het was goed bezocht en moest even in de rij wachten totdat er plaats kwam. Bestelde die soort schnitzel met Japanse curry-saus, koolsalade en witte rijst. Smaakte heerlijk. Na het eten keek ik op mijn gemak rond. Het postkantoor was op zondag helaas gesloten, vandaar geen mooie rode poststempel. Het werd 's-middags laat, Keisuke liet zich nog steeds niet horen, dus het leek me beter om op tijd terug naar het hostel te gaan. Zonde van die mooie vuurwerkshow!

Then it was time for lunch. Not far from the tourist information office I saw a restaurant with various kinds of Japanese variant of schnitzel dishes but pre-cut due to. chopsticks. It was well attended and had to wait in line for a seat. Ordered that kind of schnitzel with Japanese curry sauce, coleslaw and white rice. Tasted delicious. After dinner I looked around at ease. The post office was unfortunately closed on Sunday, hence no beautiful red postmark. It was getting late in the afternoon, Keisuke still couldn't be heard, so it seemed better to go back to the hostel in time. Shame on that beautiful fireworks show!

Het werd al donker toen ik bij het hostel in Nikko aankwam. De deur stond wagenwijd open maar Keisuke was nog niet te bekennen. Ik begreep er niks van. Ging naar ander naastgelegen hostel. Ik werd er heel vriendelijk onthaald en legde uit hoe het zomaar kwam dat de deur van mijn hostel open was en dat er niemand binnen was. Zij zeiden dat ik me geen zorgen er over hoefde te maken. Diefstal of inbraak kwam nagenoeg niet voor in Nikko. Ik had verder met Keisuke afgesproken dat hij mijn was voor 500 yen zou doen voordat ik de volgende morgen vertrok. Mijn vuile kleren lagen nog in de wasmachine. De concurrent stelde me voor dat ik naar de wasserette ga, die is vaak 24 uur per dag open. Het was ongeveer 10 minuten lopen en ik kreeg gratis waspoeder mee. Heel vriendelijk van ze. 

It was getting dark when I arrived at the hostel in Nikko. The door was wide open, but Keisuke was not yet visible. I didn't understand anything. Went to another neighboring hostel. I received a very friendly welcome and explained how it just happened that the door to my hostel was open and no one was inside. They said I didn't have to worry about it. Theft or burglary hardly ever occurred in Nikko. I had also agreed with Keisuke that he would do my laundry for 500 yen before I left the next morning. My dirty clothes were still in the washing machine. The competitor suggested that I go to the laundromat, which is often open 24 hours a day. It was about a 10 minute walk and I got free washing powder. Very friendly of them.

Bij de wasserette zag ik de instructies in het Japans maar dat er ook heel duidelijke tekeningen waren hoe de wasmachine en de droger bediend waren. Het verliep gelukkig probleemloos, na 1 uur waren mijn kleren fris en droog. Dit alles ook voor 500 yen, ca. 4 euro. Onderweg naar het hostel kocht ik wat blikjes bier en dronk buiten het hostel terwijl ik op Keisuke wachtte. Hij kwam steeds niet opdagen, die jonge duiveltje. Toevallig spotte ik een auto met alleen 13 op de kenteken, haha. Helaas heeft de slaap me ingehaald, dus weer in bed gaan liggen.

At the laundry I saw the instructions in Japanese but that there were also very clear drawings of how the washing machine and dryer were operated. Luckily it went smoothly, after 1 hour my clothes were fresh and dry. All this also for 500 yen, approx. 4 euros. On the way to the hostel I bought some cans of beer and drank outside the hostel while I waited for Keisuke. He never showed up, that young devil. Coincidentally I spotted a car with only 13 on the license plate, haha. Unfortunately sleep caught up with me, so I went back to bed.
