Citytrip in Taipei

Het werd 's-avonds rond 20.00 uur toen het vliegtuig met Hello Kitty-thema van de Eva Air ging landen in Taoyuan-Airport vlakbij Taipei. Ik wilde heel lang naar Taiwan, het echt vrij Chinees eiland vlakbij het grote communitisch Volksrepubliek China. Voordat het vliegtuig ging landen zag ik mooie verlichte straten met neon-reclames, prachtig om te zien.

It was around 8 pm when the Hello Kitty-themed airplane from the Eva Air landed in Taoyuan Airport near Taipei. I wanted to go to Taiwan for a long time, the really free Chinese island near the large Communal People's Republic of China. Before the plane landed, I saw beautiful illuminated streets with neon advertisements, beautiful to see.

Na de landing en de controle door de douane, wat het erg soepel verliep, informeerde ik naar het openbaar vervoer naar het centrum van Taipei, de Da'an District en terug. Het is totaal geen probleem, gewoon de metro nemen en daarna met de nachtbus terug naar het vliegveld. Ik deponeerde mijn grote handbagage in de bagage-kluis, zodat ik mijn handen vrij had. Bij het metrostation kocht ik een soort paarse muntje in plaats van een kaartje die ik bij het poortje moest inwerpen. Toen ik in de metro ging zitten kwam er een jong stel voor me zitten. De reis naar het Taipei Centraal Station duurde bijna 45 minuten. De man droeg sandalen en friemelde tijdens de hele reis zijn tenen. Zijn vrouw of vriendin leek niet van de indruk te zijn. Bah, zoiets doe je alleen thuis. Ik keek naar buiten, soms was het pikdonker. 

After landing and checking through customs, which went very smoothly, I inquired about public transportation to downtown Taipei, the Da'an District and back. It is no problem at all, just take the metro and then take the night bus back to the airport. I deposited my large hand luggage in the luggage locker so that I had my hands free. At the metro station I bought a kind of purple coin instead of a ticket that I had to insert at the gate. When I sat down in the metro a young couple came to sit in front of me. The journey to Taipei Central Station took almost 45 minutes. The man wore sandals and fiddled his toes during the entire trip. His wife or girlfriend didn't seem to be impressed. Phew, you only do that at home. I looked outside, sometimes it was pitch dark.

Aangekomen in het Taipei Centraal Station moest ik overstappen naar een ander metrolijn die naar het centrum bracht. De beide metrostations lagen 500 meter uit elkaar omdat ze van de verschillende maatschappijen waren. Dus ik moest me navigeren door het doolhof van de tunnels. Het was vrij druk met uitgaand publiek. Gelukkig vond ik de juiste metro die naar Chiang Kai-shek plein bracht. Het plein was zo groot. Voor het plein was er een mooi verlichte poort die de toegang bood tot dat plein.

Arriving at Taipei Central Station I had to switch to another metro line that brought to the center. The two metro stations were 500 meters apart because they were from different companies. So I had to navigate through the maze of tunnels. It was quite busy with outgoing audiences. Fortunately I found the right metro that brought to Chiang Kai-shek square. The square was so big. In front of the square there was a beautifully lit gate that provided access to that square.

Aan de weerzijdse kanten van het plein waren er nationale shouwburgen, die eruit zagen als grote Chinese tempels.

On the mutual sides of the square there were national theaters, which looked like large Chinese temples.

Je liep verder het plein op naar Chiang kai-shek Memorial Hall, een groot gebouw op de trappen.

Rechts van Chiang kai-shek Memorial Hall stond weer een mooie poort, iets kleiner dan het poort voor het plein.

To the right of Chiang kai-shek Memorial Hall was another beautiful gate, slightly smaller than the gate in front of the square.

Het was buiten erg zwoel, 25 graden met wat druppels regen. Ik wilde graag verder naar de food night market, maar die ging rond de middernacht dicht en het kon daar erg druk zijn. Dus liever van niet, maar ik wist een leuk restaurantje die door Lonely Planet was aanbevolen, het was maar een paar straten verder op. Ik belande middenin het echt Chinees wijk. Haast vervallen gebouwen met overal reclameborden en airco-kastjes aan de gevels. Ik maakte er mooie foto's ervan. Soms zag ik iemand het afval sorteren.

It was very sultry outside, 25 degrees with some drops of rain. I wanted to go to the food night market, but it closed around midnight and it could be very busy there. So I'd rather not, but I knew a nice restaurant that was recommended by Lonely Planet, it was only a few blocks away. I ended up in the middle of the real Chinese neighborhood. Almost dilapidated buildings with billboards everywhere and air conditioning units on the facades. I made beautiful pictures of it. Sometimes I saw someone sort the waste.

Aangekomen in dat restaurant wat druk bezocht door de locals was, kon ik plaatsje vinden en menu vragen. Het was weliswaar in het Chinees zonder foto's maar met beetje beschrijvingen in het Engels. Het waren vooral Chinese traditionale gerechten. Ik bestelde een varkenvlees gerecht. Hoewel er geen pepers er in verwerkt zat, smaakte die heerlijk pittig. Ik bestelde ook Taiwanese bier. Die smaakte zo lekker fris dat je het als water dronk.

Arriving in that restaurant which was crowded by the locals, I could find a place and request a menu. Although it was in Chinese without pictures but with a few descriptions in English. They were mainly Chinese traditional dishes. I ordered a pork dish. Although it contained no peppers, it tasted wonderfully spicy. I also ordered Taiwanese beer. It tasted so nice and fresh that you drank it like water.

Daarna bestelde ik zelfgemaakte tofu-gerecht om mijn maag goed mee te vullen om hele nacht goed door te komen. Voldaan, ging ik rustig verder te wandelen richting het Taipei Centraal Station zonder haast te maken. 

Then I ordered a homemade tofu dish to fill my stomach well to get through all night. Satisfied, I quietly continued walking towards Taipei Central Station without hurrying.

Er hingen jongeren rond die zich amuseren van het uitgaan. Naarmate ik dichterbij het station kwam zag ik een paar oude en overgebleven Portugese gebouwen die uit de 16e eeuw stamden. In een paar pleinen stond er een Chinees tempel midden in. 

There were young people hanging around having fun going out. As I got closer to the station, I saw a few old and remaining Portuguese buildings from the 16th century. In a few squares there was a Chinese temple in the middle.

Vlakbij het station in een zijstraatje waren er traditionale voetmassage salons gevestigd waar jongeren na het uitgaan graag zich willen verwennen met massage. Ik ging binnen en werd begroet door een dikke man die als Chinese Boeddha lachte. Hij legde me uit dat er verschillende behandelingen mogelijk waren. Ik had uren de tijd voor, dus ik koos voor een volledige behandeling. Dat hield in, eerst voetbad, voetmassage en daarna schouder- en rugmassage op bed. Ik dompelde mijn voeten in een heet badje, en moest 30 minuten stil zitten. Naast me kwamen een paar meisjes gaan zitten voor hetzelfde behandeling. Ik kreeg sloten Chinese kruidenthee. Na het voetenbad kwam een oudere masseur mijn voeten en benen masseren. Het ging soms hardhandig aan toe met zijn vuisten, alsof ik gemarteld werd.

Close to the station in a side street there were traditional foot massage salons where young people would like to pamper themselves with massage after going out. I entered and was greeted by a fat man who laughed like Chinese Buddha. He explained to me that different treatments were possible. I had hours before, so I opted for a complete treatment. That meant, first foot bath, foot massage and then shoulder and back massage in bed. I immersed my feet in a hot tub and had to sit still for 30 minutes. A few girls sat down next to me for the same treatment. I got a lot of Chinese herbal tea. After the foot bath an older masseur came to massage my feet and legs. Sometimes it was hard to crack his fists, as if I was being tortured.

Toen hij eindelijk klaar was met het "martelen" van mijn voeten en benen, kon ik even pauze nemen. Daarna ging ik naar beneden waar er bedden lagen, ik moest op mijn buik liggen. Tijdens massage aan mijn rug en schouders was het zo ontspannend dat ik in slaap viel. Het was alsof ik uren geslapen had. Toen was het voorbij. Voelde me herboren en bedankte die dikke man die nog steeds uitbundig lachte.  Zie video Chinese massage.

When he finally finished "torturing" my feet and legs, I could take a break. Then I went down to where there were beds, I had to lie on my stomach. During massage on my back and shoulders it was so relaxing that I fell asleep. It was as if I had slept for hours. Then it was over. Felt reborn and thanked that fat man who still laughed exuberantly. See video Chinese massage.

Het was diep in de nacht toen ik het busstation bereikte. Er waren haast geen bussen meer behalve die naar het vliegveld reden. In dat busstation zat vol met wachtende reizigers. Volgens de dienstregeling zou er een bus vertrekken om 04.00 uur, maar de dienstregeling werd niet nageleefd. De bus vertrok gewoon als het vol was. Dus gewoon om de beurt wachten. De chauffeurs rookten gewoon buiten waar er rookverbod was. De loketist ging in discussie in het Chinees met die chauffeurs wanneer zij nou eindelijk gingen rijden. Kom op zei hij ongeveer, tegen de chauffeur die kennelijk geen zin in had. Gelukkig ging de bus eindelijk rijden. Onderweg deed ik een dutje. Zie video On the way to the airport.

It was late in the night when I reached the bus station. There were hardly any buses left except for the ones that drove to the airport. In that bus station was full of waiting travelers. According to the timetable a bus would leave at 4 a.m., but the timetable was not observed. The bus just left when it was full. So just wait in turn. The drivers just smoked outside where there was no smoking. The counter went into discussion in Chinese with those drivers when they finally started driving. Come on he said something to the driver who apparently didn't feel like it. Fortunately the bus finally started driving. On the way I took a nap. See video On the way to the airport.

Het duurde bijna 1 uur toen ik het Taoyuan luchthaven bereikte. Ik haalde mijn handbagage uit de kluis en ging me inchecken voor de lange en zware vlucht naar huis. De meeste restaurants en winkels in het vliegveld waren net open en ik kon rustig mijn vlucht afwachten. Zo gaf ik de laatste Taiwanse dollars uit naar een uitgebreid ontbijt. Een biljet van 500 dollar hield ik als souvenir. Ik vloog weer met Eva Air. Dit keer geen Hello Kitty-thema. Het vliegtuig was vol met toeristen die naar Bangkok wilden.

It took almost 1 hour when I reached Taoyuan airport. I took my hand luggage out of the safe and went to check in for the long and hard flight home. Most of the restaurants and shops in the airport had just opened and I was able to wait for my flight. For example, I spent the last Taiwanese dollars on a full breakfast. I kept a 500 dollar bill as a souvenir. I flew again with Eva Air. Not a Hello Kitty theme this time. The plane was full of tourists who wanted to go to Bangkok.
