Trips to France and Switzerland

Nadat ik compleet gevaccineerd was en dat ik corona paspoort had gekregen wilde ik verder gaan dan alleen naar de buurlanden ook binnen 1 dagreis. Frankrijk is een ware paradijs voor de filatelisten zoals ik en ik wilde ook de echte Franse sfeer proeven. Voor toen covid-19 toesloeg ging ik regelmatig naar Frankrijk. 

After I was fully vaccinated and that I had received corona passport, I wanted to go further than just to the neighboring countries also within 1 day trip. France is a true paradise for the philatelists like me and I also wanted to taste the real French atmosphere. Before covid-19 hit, I went to France regularly.

Longwy

Longwy is een interessante stad onder de rook van zuid Luxemburg. Het bestaat uit 2 delen: bovenstad Longwy-haut en benedenstad Longwy-bas. Ik ging er vaak erheen om nieuwe postzegels voor mijn verzameling. Het centraal postkantoor in Longwy-bas had een uitgebreide assortiment, het bevat niet alleen postzegels van Frankrijk maar ook Monaco, overzeese Franse gebieden Mayotte, Franse Antartica, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon. Kende de postmeester goed en we brachten urenlang door met dikke albums uit te zoeken. Als bonus kreeg je mooie filatelieloketstempel op je brieven.

Longwy is an interesting city under the smoke of southern Luxembourg. It consists of 2 parts: upper town Longwy-haut and lower town Longwy-bas. I often went there for new stamps for my collection. The central post office in Longwy-bas had an extensive range, it contains not only stamps of France but also Monaco, overseas French territories of Mayotte, French Antartica, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon. Knew the postmaster well and we spent hours picking out thick albums. As a bonus, you got a nice philately counter stamp on your letters.

Anno 2021 is het helaas andersom, het centraal postkantoor is verhuisd naar Longwy-haut. Ik kwam smorgens vroeg aan en nuttigde het ontbijt op zijn Frans bij de café op het plein en ik las Franse krant voor de filatelisten die ik bij de kiosk gekocht had. Tegenover het plein lag dat postkantoor. Die had een beperkte assortiment, alleen Franse postzegels. Kochte een voorraadje en kreeg standaard filatelieloket op mijn brieven maar ik kreeg de eer om zelf te mogen stempelen. Na de afloop bezocht ik het fort uit de 18e eeuw. Kocht een paar kaarten met foto's van dat fort en plakte ik mooie postzegels met Napoleon. Stuurde naar Le Carrer d'Encrie in Parijs voor passende stempels. Die kreeg ik netjes in een envelop thuis.

Anno 2021 it is unfortunately the other way around, the central post office has moved to Longwy-haut. I arrived early in the morning and had breakfast in French at the café on the square and I read French newspaper for the philatelists I had bought at the kiosk. Opposite the square was that post office. It had a limited range, only French stamps. Bought a stock and got a standard philately counter on my letters but I got the honor to be able to stamp myself. Afterwards I visited the fort from the 18th century. Bought a few cards with pictures of that fort and I stuck beautiful stamps with Napoleon. Sent to Le Carrer d'Encrie in Paris for appropriate stamps. I received it neatly in an envelope at home.

Franse Ardennen

French Ardennes

Eerst naar Sedan, ik was er al ook eens geweest, prachtig stadje met fort. Er werd jaarlijks grote modelbouw show gehouden, maar wegens covid-19 was het afgelast. Ging verder naar Charleville-Mézierès, ook zeer de moeite waard waar ik paar keer ben geweest. Het bekendste toeristische plek is de Place Ducale, haast indentieke gebouwen uit de 17e eeuw rond het plein. Daarna naar Rocroi, een pittoreske vestingsplaats met maar 1 km breed is. Laatste plaats was Givet, ook een mooie plek langs de Maas, bekend met hoge citadel. 

First to Sedan, I had already been there once, beautiful town with fort. There was an annual large model building show, but due to covid-19 it was cancelled. Continued to Charleville-Mézierès, also very worthwhile where I have been a few times. The most famous tourist spot is the Place Ducale, almost identical buildings from the 17th century around the square. Then to Rocroi, a picturesque fortified town with only 1 km wide. Last place was Givet, also a beautiful place along the Meuse, known with high citadel.

 

Dunkerque

Duinkirk 

Duinkerken is heel bekend met de grootscheepse evacautie van 300.000 Engelse en Franse soldaten in het begin van 1940 toen ze omgesingeld werden door de Duitsers. Dat niet alleen maar Duinkerken en de omgeving heeft lange martieme geschiedenis. Daar ben ik erg geinteresseerd in. Ten eerste ging ik naar Gravelines om het begin van de martieme geschiedenis om met eigen ogen te zien. Daar ligt een ambachtelijk scheepswerf waar de replica van een oorlogszeilschip Jean Bart gebouwd wordt. Dit alles volgens de 17e eeuws methode. Ik kwam paar leuke studentes tegen die daar stage liepen. We praatten over de bouw van dat schip. Een van hen Zoé was zo aardig een tekening te maken in plaats van de stempel van dat schip op mijn brief.

Dunkirk is very familiar with the large-scale evacaution of 300,000 British and French soldiers in the early 1940s when they were surrounded by the Germans. That not only Dunkirk and the surrounding area has long martieme history. I'm very interested in that. First, I went to Gravelines to see the beginning of martian history with my own eyes. There is a traditional shipyard where the replica of a war sailboat Jean Bart is built. All this according to the 17th century method. I met some nice students who were doing an internship there. We talked about building that ship. One of them Zoé was kind enough to make a drawing instead of the stamp of that ship on my letter.

Onder de indruk ging ik naar Duinkerken. Daar aangekomen ging ik naar het martieme museum. Aan de kade lagen twee oude schepen aangemeerd die men aansluitend kon bezichtigen, een rode oude vuurtorenboot en grote zeilschip La Duchesse Anne. Echt mooi om te zien en rond te lopen.

Impressed, I went to Dunkirk. Once there, I went to the martieme museum. Two old ships were moored on the quay that could then be visited, a red old lighthouse boat and large sailing ship La Duchesse Anne. Really nice to see and walk around.

Daarna ging ik naar het postkantoor voor een filatelieloketstempel. Nadat het afgehandeld was had ik zin in een mooie strandwandeling bij St.Malo daar was een promenade die liefst 4 km lang is. Aan de landzijde was er een lange rij met prachtige oude huizen uit het Belle Epoque tijdperk. Juist in het midden van de promenade kwam ik oude dove gezin tegen. We konden ons redelijk elkaar begrijpen met gebarentaal. Het was een leuke en spontane ontmoeting. Na de wandeling kreeg ik trek in een stevig maaltijd bij de Buffalo Bill restaurant alvorens ik naar huis ging.

Then I went to the post office for a philately counter stamp. After it was finished I felt like a nice beach walk at St.Malo there was a promenade that is no less than 4 km (2.5 miles) long. On the land side there was a long row of beautiful old houses from the Belle Epoque era. Just in the middle of the promenade I came across old deaf family. We could understand each other reasonably well with sign language. It was a fun and spontaneous meeting. After the walk I got hungry for a hearty meal at the Buffalo Bill restaurant before I went home.

 

Elzas

Alsace 

Het was eind september toen de verbouw van mijn badkamer voltooid was en ik had nog een paar dagen tijd over. Wilde naar de Elzas gaan. Eerst naar Colmar, mooie duitsachtig stad tussen Straatburg en Mulhouse. Vroeger werd er Duits gesproken maar tegenwoordig Frans. Dat betekent niet dat er tradities en eten verloren ging. Sterker nog, het is nog steeds springlevend. Alles is echt anders dan de doorsnee franse keuken. Bier smaakte echt zoals de Duitse pilsner. Stevige maaltijden zijn de norm.

It was the end of September when the renovation of my bathroom was completed and I still had a few days left. Wanted to go to Alsace. First to Colmar, beautiful German-like town between Strasbourg and Mulhouse. In the past, German was spoken but nowadays French. That doesn't mean traditions and food were lost. In fact, it's still alive and kicking. Everything is really different from the average French cuisine. Beer really tasted like the German pilsner. Hearty meals are the norm.

Ik ging verder naar Mulhouse, grote stad vlakbij Zwitserland, bekend met het spoorwegenmuseum en old timer auto museum. Was vroeger met mijn vader die vrachtwagen reed 45 jaar geleden al in Ililzach vlakbij Mulhouse geweest. Ik had hotelkamer geboekt in het centrum van Mulhouse. Het werd 's-avonds laat. Wilde anders dan dat stevig Elzassisch maaltijd, en kwam pure Indiase eettentje tegen die veelvuldig door Indiase mensen bezocht werd. Bestelde een groot bord met kleine kommetjes met naan-brood. Echt heerlijk pittig. Na het eten maakte ik een wandeling door het centrum, het viel me op dat sommige oude gebouwen Zwitsers eruit zagen.

I continued to Mulhouse, big city near Switzerland, familiar with the railway museum and old timer car museum. Had been with my father who drove truck 45 years ago in Ililzach near Mulhouse. I had booked hotel room in the center of Mulhouse. It was late at night. Wanted to be different from that hearty Alsatian meal, and came across pure Indian eatery that was frequently visited by Indian people. Ordered a large plate of small bowls of naan bread. Really delicious spicy. After dinner I took a walk through the center, I noticed that some old buildings looked Swiss.

 

Volgende morgen ging ik naar het nationaal spoorwegenmuseum. Het was erg uitgebreid met grote collectie oude treinen en ook wat auto's. Hilarisch was de omgevallen stoomlocomotief alsof Obélix die per ongeluk lichtjes aangeraakt had. En er waren treinen die leken rijden. Binnenin zaten er poppen die passagiers moesten voorstellen en bij de ramen draaiden er films alsof de trein voorbij racet. Deed me denken aan de moord in de Orient Express.

Next morning I went to the National Railway Museum. It was very extensive with large collection of old trains and also some cars. Hilarious was the fallen steam locomotive as if Obélix had accidentally touched it slightly. And there were trains that laymen run. Inside there were dolls that were supposed to represent passengers and at the windows there were movies as if the train was racing by. Reminded me of the murder in the Orient Express.

Bazel, Zwitserland

Basel, Switzerland 

Nadat ik het spoorwegenmuseum bezocht had ging ik verder richting Zwitserland. Om de dure tolheffing te vermijden ging ik binnendoor. De doaune controle was redelijk streng en moest formulier invullen over het verblijfsduur vanwege de covid-19 maatregelen. Na de afhandeling parkeerde ik vlakbij het centrum. Het was heerlijk weer zo'n 25 graden terwijl in Nederland de herfst begonnen was. Er was veel volk maar ze hielden zich aan de maatregelen. Ik ging eerst lekker lunchen. Na de lunch ging ik door het oud centrum naar het postkantoor vlakbij het centraal station voor de filatelieloketstempel. Het was binnen erg druk en moest bijna 1 uur wachten eer ik aan de beurt kwam. Tot mijn opluchting kreeg ik mooie stempels op mijn kaarten. 

After visiting the railway museum I continued towards Switzerland. To avoid the expensive toll, I went inside. The doaune control was fairly strict and had to fill in a form about the length of stay due to the covid-19 measures. After the handling I parked near the center. The weather was wonderful about 25 degrees while autumn had started in the Netherlands. There were many people but they adhered to the measures. I first went for lunch. After lunch I went through the old center to the post office near the central station for the philately counter stamp. It was very busy inside and had to wait almost 1 hour before it was my turn. To my relief, I got nice stamps on my cards.

Héhé, het werd tijd voor een mooie stadswandeling naar de hoog gelegen gedeelte met mooie uitzicht op de rivier de Rijn die een bocht maakt. Prachtige oude huizen aan de steile straatjes. Daarna dronk ik grote pul echt Zwiters bier, smaakte heerlijk. Het werd echt tijd om huiswaarts te gaan omdat mijn vakantie bijna voorbij is.

Hey, it was time for a nice city walk to the high part with a beautiful view of the river Rhine that makes a turn. Beautiful old houses on the steep streets. Then I drank a big mug of real Swiss beer, tasted delicious. It was really time to go home because my holiday is almost over.
