Costs for my travel in Japan

Japan is niet bepaald goedkoop land om te verblijven. Toch is het me gelukt om binnen de budget van €100,= per dag te houden. Ik zelf verbleef 22 nachten in Japan. Ik heb goed naar de tips van de reisbloggers gekeken, vooral van iemand die ik van vroeger kende. Het klopte grotendeels wat zij er over schreef maar ik had sterke twijfels over de overnachtingskosten. Zij beweerde dat het gemiddeld €10,= per nacht in een hostel kostte. Ik vroeg aan haar hoe zij er aan kwam, ik kon niks vinden op http://www.booking.com, http://www.hostelworld.com en http://www.airbnb.com voor die prijzen per nacht. Maar ik kreeg geen antwoord van haar. Ook na 30 weken nog steeds niet. Goed, laat haar maar, ik wilde het bewijzen door alle uitgaven per dag te noteren in mijn schrift. Daarna bekend maken wat de werkelijke kosten wat ik uitgaf tijdens mijn verblijf in Japan voor mensen die vakantie naar Japan willen plannen. De prijzen zijn omgerekend in Euro's. (1€,= tegen 125 Japanse Yen).

Japan is not exactly a cheap country to stay in. Nevertheless, I managed to keep within the budget of € 100 per day. I myself stayed 22 nights in Japan. I looked closely at the tips of the travel bloggers, especially from someone I knew from before. It was largely true what she wrote about it, but I had strong doubts about the overnight costs. She claimed that it cost an average of € 10 per night in a hostel. I asked her how she got it, I couldn't find anything on http://www.booking.com, http://www.hostelworld.com and http://www.airbnb.com for those prices per night. But I didn't get an answer from her. Even after 30 weeks still not. All right, leave her, I wanted to prove it by writing down all the expenses per day in my notebook. Then announce the actual costs I spent during my stay in Japan for people who want to plan a vacation to Japan. The prices have been converted into Euros. (€ 1 against 125 Japanese Yen).

Ik had bewust niet voor JR-railpass gekozen, die kostte €477,= voor 3 weken. Nadeel van de JR-pass was dat het niet geldig was voor het reizen via de meeste private spoorwegmaatschappijen. Ik had een stukje met Shinkansen gereisd, het was niet echt opwindend zoals ik verwachtte. De Shinkansen reed grotendeels op de viaducten, bij 300 km per uur zag ik het landschap die ik amper kon zien, voorbij zoeven, maar de trein reed zo stil als het kerkhof. De mooiste treinritten  maakte ik via de private spoorwegmaatschappijen mee. Reed met de locale treinen, die net zo comfortabel was als de 1e klasse door het mooie landschap. De boemeltrein naar Kuroishi maakte een onwistbare indruk op me, het leek alsof het uit de derde wereldland kwam. Sommige JR-lijnen zoals tussen Niigata en Aikta was heel mooi, vooral langs de kust.

I deliberately did not opt for the JR rail pass, which cost € 477 for 3 weeks. The disadvantage of the JR pass was that it was not valid for traveling via most private railway companies. I had traveled a bit with Shinkansen, it was not really exciting as I expected. The Shinkansen drove mostly on the viaducts, at 300 km per hour I saw the landscape that I could barely see, pass by, but the train ran as quietly as the graveyard. I experienced the most beautiful train rides through the private railway companies. Drove the local trains, which was just as comfortable as the 1st class through the beautiful landscape. The slow train to Kuroishi made an indelible impression on me, it seemed as if it was from the third world country. Some JR lines such as between Niigata and Aikta were very beautiful, especially along the coast.

Ik was heel lang van plan om een auto te huren voor een rondreis door het eiland Hokkiado. Ik had in Hakodate een auto gehuurd bij de Times Car, een van de betrouwbare autoverhuurbedrijven in Japan. Hokkiado is een van de minst drukke regio's in Japan, zo had ik geen last van de drukke verkeer en veelvuldige bebouwde kommen langs de route. Het was echt genieten door het ruig en mooi landschap, zelfs in slecht weer. Natuurlijk had het een grote impact op mijn reisbudget, maar dat had ik bewust er voor gekozen. Totale kosten voor 3 dagen:

For a long time I was planning to rent a car for a tour of the island of Hokkiado. I rented a car in Hakodate from the Times Car, one of the reliable car rental companies in Japan. Hokkiado is one of the least busy regions in Japan, so I was not bothered by the busy traffic and frequent built-up areas along the route. It was really enjoy the rough and beautiful landscape, even in bad weather. Of course it had a major impact on my travel budget, but I had consciously chosen that. Total costs for 3 days:

Een fiets huren

Steden die ik bezocht had waren grotendeels vlak, ideaal om te fietsen, zo bespaarde ik de kosten voor het openbaar vervoer. Fiets huren kost gemiddeld €4,= per dag. Lekker goedkoop, hé. En goed voor je lijn. Ik heb totaal 7 keer fiets gehuurd, wat het neerkwam in totaal €28,=.

Cities that I visited were mostly flat, ideal for cycling, so I saved the costs for public transport. Renting a bike costs on average € 4 per day. Nice and cheap. And good for your line. I rented a total of 7 times a bike, which amounted to a total of € 28.

Ik had van tevoren een Japanse simkaart bestelde voor €42,= (inclusief verzendskosten). Maar die werkte voor geen meter in Japan. Dus weggegooid geld. Maar ik gebruikte WiFi. Hotspots waren overal te vinden. Openbare WiFi-spots werkten maar een tijdje, dan moest je opnieuw inloggen. Alleen bij de hostels en de 24-uurs supermarkten werkte de WiFi heel goed. TIP: als je ergens je smartphone wilt gebruiken, ga naar de dichtstbijzijnde 24-uurs supermarkt 7eleven, Lawson en Familymart, behalve de Secomart. Ze liggen vaak binnen 1 km afstand van elkaar in de steden. Met de auto: sommige tankstations of wegrestaurants hebben WiFi. Zelf kon ik voor noodgevallen via T-Mobile het thuisfront contact op te nemen. Dat bleek gelukkig niet nodig te zijn.

I had ordered a Japanese SIM card in advance for € 42 (including shipping costs). But that didn't work for a meter in Japan. So wasted money. But I used WiFi. Hotspots were everywhere. Public WiFi spots only worked for a while, then you had to log in again. Only at the hostels and the 24-hour supermarkets did the WiFi work very well. TIP: if you want to use your smartphone somewhere, go to the nearest 24-hour supermarket 7eleven, Lawson and Familymart, except the Secomart. They are often within 1 km of each other in the cities. By car: some gas stations or roadside restaurants have WiFi. I was able to contact the home front via T-Mobile for emergencies. Fortunately, that turned out not to be necessary.

Grootste twistpunt is dat er beweerd wordt dat je voor €10,= per nacht kunt verblijven in een hostel. Ik heb er geen bewijzen van gezien, ook niet bij andere reisblogs. Ik wil niet beweren dat iemand liegt, maar ik kreeg geen antwoord hoe die er aan die overnachtingskosten kwam. Niet netjes van haar. Ik vind dat de reizigers over de werkelijke overnachtingskosten geïnformeerd worden zodat zij hun reisbudget konden plannen. Zelf had ik WEL voor €10,= per nacht verbleven in een hostel in Berlijn, zie blogs over Berlijn. In Japan verbleef ik afwisselend in de hostels (Guesthouse) en ryokans (typisch Japans kleine hotel waar het traditioneel ingericht was) omdat er geen hostels in de buurt in voorhanden was. Slapen op de dunne matras op de vloer was het even wennen. Wat het vooraf boeken betreft, ik had de eerste overnachting na mijn aankomst vooraf geboekt in verband met de immigratieformulier voor de doauane. De rest direct via airbnb, zelfs een paar uur van te voren. Aangezien het toerisme seizoen bijna ten einde was, eind augustus en begin september was het eigenlijk niet nodig om lang van te voren te boeken.

In Japan, I stayed alternately in hostels (Guesthouse) and ryokans (typical Japanese small hotel where it was traditionally decorated) because there were no hostels in the area. It took some getting used to sleeping on the thin mattress on the floor. Regarding pre-booking, I had pre-booked the first night after my arrival due to the immigration form for the custom. The rest directly via airbnb, even a few hours in advance. Since the tourism season was almost over, at the end of August and the beginning of September it was not necessary to book well in advance.

De kosten voor eten in Japan zijn in het algemeen redelijk. Ramen kost ca. €5,=. Zelfs de lekkernijen zoals sushi, sashimi of wagyu-rundvlees kostten rond €10,= per hoofdgerecht. Ontbijten (op zijn Japans of Westers) met koffie kan bij 24-uurs supermarkten kost gemiddeld €5,=. Bij het uiteten hoef je geen drinken te bestellen, want het is nogal duur. Je krijgt onbeperkt gratis water of thee bij. Bier drinken kan achteraf door blikjes bier te kopen in een 24-uurs supermarkt. Halve liter bierblik kost daar ca. €2,50 ipv. €5,= in de bars of restaurants. Je kunt ook warme gerechten in die supermarkten kopen en die worden gratis opgewarmd. Aangezien ik een man ben, dus ik at en dronk meer.

Ik had diverse tempels, schrijns, kastels en musea bezocht, maar ook niet té vaak. De tempels, kastels en schrijns zien vaak hetzelfde uit. De entree kosten zijn erg uiteenlopend van €2,= tot €10,=. Soms hoefde ik niet eens te betalen of kreeg een korting vanwege mijn handicap. Tijdens mijn trip met de fiets of de auto of de trein of te voet, zag ik mooie bezieningswaarden, natuur, etc. Ik had vanwege mijn hobby vooral interesse voor de spoorwegen, modelbouw en de stempels. Zelf had ik een complete modeltrein set in bouwdozen gekocht voor mijn modelspoorbaan thuis. Gestempelde kaarten stuurde ik per post naar mijn postbus-adres. Ik had postfrisse Japanse postzegels in een verzameling ter frankeerwaarde van 9000 Yen van te voren bij de veiling gekocht voor €47,=, zo kon ik totaal 125 kaarten er mee plakken.

I had purchased Japanese stamps in a collection with a franking value of 9000 Yen in advance at the auction for € 47, so I could stick a total of 125 cards with it.

De totale kosten zijn exclusief de vluchten van naar of vanuit Japan.

Inclusief auto huren had me alles in totaal €2176,= gekost wat het neerkwam op €99,= per dag. 

Als men er voor kiest om geen auto te huren, zou het totaal €1661,= kosten, dus gemiddeld €75,= per dag, wat het te doen is.

Het hangt er van af wat je wilt, en dat je vaak keuzes moet maken om de kosten beheersbaar te maken. Japan biedt veel waar voor je budget, hoe het ook wat je wilt, als je maar goed oplet.
